Hello all!
I am helping my cousin setup their home WiFi/network. I am trying to decide based off tech article reviews and amazon product reviews. I take the amazon reviews with a grain of salt because it's all too easy to be dissuaded by negative reviews.

So their house is about 2,000 sqft with a backyard big enough for a large shed, pool and a grassy area big enough for playing horse shoes or the bean bag toss game. I'd say altogether they are wanting to blanket a quarter of an acre with WiFi inside a 2,00 sqft house. The house looks to have been built in the 1980's and does not contain block walls.

$500 is the budget.

I have been looking at either singular WiFi router solutions or mesh WiFt setups but I'm having a hard time deciding which would be best for them.

The house contains 2 PS4's, multiple gaming PC's and 3 TV's for streaming content via streaming services. Each person has a smartphone that will be connected to the wireless.

They also want to have the choice of running an ethernet cable from the router/main mesh unit to their son's room for better connectivity.

Solution
No there is not any ethernet cabling installed. We would have to get a spool of ethernet cable and I'd have to run the cable up walls and through the attic and crimp the ends for that.

There is a large window that faces the backyard so an AP could be placed near the window without the need for an outside one.

I'm basically looking for advice on the beat solution here. The cousins are not at all computer savvy. It needs to be as low maintenance and high uptime as possible. They pay for gigabit internet so having those speeds over wifi is very important along with coverage across the whole house and the backyard.
The best solution IS to run ethernet cabling and have multiple wired access points. You can have a single SSID...

Is there ethernet cabling installed? Can some of the budget be used to install cabling?
The backyard probably needs an outdoor AP just for it. For good performance, that AP should be wired to the primary router.

The best solution IS to run ethernet cabling and have multiple wired access points. You can have a single SSID across multiple wired APs just like a mesh system.
Mesh systems are just fancy WIFI repeaters.

I am aware of this. The family I am assisting with this install doesn't want to run wires all over the place. They just want a simple wifi solution that covers the house and backyard.
