Best wood for building custom desk

Solution
I had a couple of 720mm wide blank doors I kept in the shed for the kids for their gaming nights.

Using a blank hoolow-core standard door blank is a great idea for a top for your new desk.

These are 2040 long (high) and standard sizes are 520 through to 870 deep (wide).

You can get vinyl or timber or painted blanks and they are cheap.

They are also light.

probably best to go down to your hardware store and ask them. Personally I like cedar if you can find/afford it.

Most people however will be better off just buying a solid core door and use that as their desktop. Already cut to the size you want, has a nice hole in it for your to run cords through and should last decades, unlike most premade desks.

Seconding why_wolf's suggestion. You may even find a "dinged" door at a discount price. Just put the "bad" side down.

Placing the door over two 2-drawer file cabinets can really work well. May find the file cabinets on sale somewhere as well.

And even if the door is not pre-drilled for the handle - holes are easy to drill wherever you need them.
