Yep, about 8 years ago they charged someone I knew $570 for a lousy laptop hard drive replacement. $570! I could build a whole gaming PC for that cost.

All the Geek Squad will do is download some data recovery program and run it, something you yourself could probably do. Avoid them at all costs! Find a trustworthy local computer shop.
 
Agree 100% here, Geek Squad is absolutely awful. I work in IT and have a co-worker who worked for them in his youth. There is maybe 1 guy who actually knows a little bit about computers, the rest of them are kids who are "computer savvy" with no experience or knowledge, and mainly work off google or a few select best buy programs.

Most of the work is outsourced rarely is anything done "in-house". They will over-charge you 10 times over. Avoid them at all costs. Either do it yourself by learning online and downloading some software to help, or find a trustworthy local PC repair shop!
 


I would not be surprised in that case if they are asking questions right here on Tomshardware!
 


Yep! Would not surprise me at all! It's a shame how they operate and exploit customers.
