I'll be doing this for the UK; $1000 is about £610 according to XE.com on the 9th of June 2011.

Griffolion's Budget Gamer PC
Processor: AMD Phenom 955 3.2GHz @ £87.54
Motherboard: Asus M4A88T-M AMD 880G @ £59.86
RAM: 8GB Corsair XMS 3 1600MHz @ £64.99
Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 560Ti OC @ £173.47
Hard Drive: 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 @ £40.92
Case: Antec One Hundred @ £41.27
Power Supply: Corsair 650HX @ £87.79
Cooling: Titan Skalli @ £21.58
DVD Burner: Samsung 22x DVD Writer @ £14.66

£608.86 with delivery @ £13.99. Phenom can be overclocked with the Skalli to something a little nicer. The motherboard is only a micro-atx and a low end one at that, so no SLI or Crossfire but the 560Ti will be able to handle up to 1080p with ease (and someone on this budget build, I doubt, will be on multi-monitor or anything higher than 1080). Solid Corsair HX unit, again not chosen with SLI or Crossfire in mind, but given enough headroom for an over clock. I took advantage of the really reasonable prices of 8GB sets of sticks now, making this set up suitable not only for gaming but for video editing etc too; it's also 1600Mhz to accommodate any overclock on the CPU. Though if you were to get Spartan about it, you could drop down to a 4GB set and save yourself £20. Standard choice with the Spinpoint F3. Antec One Hundred should case it all very nicely as they do high quality stuff.

This is obviously without an OS, a few changes would have to be made to accommodate Windows, like moving down to an Athlon, maybe removing the Skalli and going back to stock clocks and moving down to 4GB sticks at 1333 MHz. This would be in order to stick to ~£610.

Looks quite good :) probably not a problem, but the cooler says its only compatible with AM2, not AM3/AM3+. And props on fitting that much graphics muscle into a $1000 build.

* GPU - ~$100-130 I'd stay around the AMD 5770/6770 (~$20-50 savings)
(example) - $118 - $20 MIR = $98!!! Plus comes w/FREE Dirt3 game ($40-50 value)!!!
SAPPHIRE 100338L Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Cheap! :p Leaves lots of room for peripherals. 6870 is a strong card for 1080P gaming. x2 555 overclocks well; and is fine even at stock for most games. Chance of unlock is added bonus. CPU cooler is super cheap, and fantastic at keeping temps down (Performs similarly to the high-end Noctuas.)

AM3+ board gives nice upgrade path straight to bulldozer!

ksampanna's "Easily Runs Crysis" merrily Chugging-along Rig
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE 3.2GHz $179.99
Motherboard: ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+ $129.99
RAM: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB 1600MHz $74.99
Graphics Card: 2 X SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 $339.98
Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4EG 1.5TB $64.99
Case: COOLER MASTER Elite RC-310 $39.99
Power Supply: CORSAIR 650TX $89.99
Cooling: XIGMATEK Loki SD963 $24.99
BD-ROM: SAMSUNG Black 12X BD-ROM $64.99

TOTAL - $1009.9
Haven't factored in rebates (which do exist on some of above, helping to bring the total down to ~ $1000)

Build Notes:
1) Has the best AMD cpu imo
2) With the imminent arrival of Bulldozer, it's a given that any current AMD build has to be AM3+
3) Graphics - 2 X 6850. More performance than a 580, for so much less. Will chew through any game @ 1080p for atleast a couple of years.
4) Case - Unbeatable at that price. Have first hand experience. Doesn't look or feel cheap.
5) BD-ROM - I think it's time for us to move past DVD writers. As games get bigger & bigger (who knows, even Windows 9 might not fit on traditional
DVDs) & more & more movies are available on Blu-Ray, a BD-ROM starts to look less like a luxury & more of a necessity.
6) RAM - At these prices, you'd be crazy not to get 8 GB. Big enough to finally start a basic ramdisk.
7) HDD - Sure the F4 spins slower but denser platters (3 X 667 GB) should compensate for that. Factor in 1.5 TB of storage space, & you simply can't
complain

Above is the list of component's I would put together with a $1000 target in mind to meet the criteria for the Budget AMD-Based Gaming PC.

If I were building an AMD Budget Gaming system for myself I would change the following,

2.Processor: Athlon II X3 455 - £58.76
It has the best FPS/£ ratio - £30.03 saved

4.RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz - £40.94
£38.42 saved

5.Graphics Card: Sapphire 11192-01-20G HD 6670 1GB GDDR5 - £74.98
It has the best FPS/£ ratio - £105.30 saved

Total saving £173.75 / $282.193

With the saving I would also get
6.SSD Drive: OCZ 120GB OCZSSD3-2VTX120G - £169.99

New Total = £607.29 / $986.348
