As mentioned in the title i have an old hp pavilion with the Bestec ATX-300-12Z Rev CDR power supply. I am on the verge of assembling a new build and however am on a really low budget. I plan to skimp out on the power supply so as to get the maximum of the money i have available.
I have read Bestec is bad however i also read that it mainly had issues with the atx-300-12e series. This power supply has been running a 8600gt, pentium D and 160gb ide hard disk with no issues up to now.

Is it safe to re-use thanks in advance. :) Please help

It depends what graphics card you choose for your new build. Even for your current 8600GT, a 300w PSU is only borderline sufficient. If you don't want to fork out for a new graphics card I suggest you play it safe and just use the integrated graphics on whatever motherboard you buy.

Bear in mind that skimping on the PSU can be false economy because when a PSU fails it can also damage other components, including the graphics card. Skimp on other things if you must for now, but never the PSU.
