Side panel fans typically make temps overall worse in the system.
Cases have 2 dimensional airflow, from front to back, bottom to top. When you add in a third dimension to this, it disrupts airflow more than it benefits anything.

He is right in this regard.. but it also depends on the other fans as well. You know, positive or negative pressure, CFM, airflow direction..^^
