I am getting a 120 hz, 2ms, 1920x1080 23 inch LCD in the mail to connect to my new rig.

I am wondering if I would get even better performance and a smoother experience if I simply connected the rig via hdmi to my 42 inch plasma? I believe plasma screens get around 600mhz? Would the hdmi cable connected from GPU to TV be enough to get me all the 600mhz of the plasma?

I know with the LCD monitor I have to use the dual link dvi cable to get the 120 mhz out of it.

600 mhz? I think you mean 600 Hz. However, I think that only applies to the internal refresh. A dual-link HDMI cable probably only has enough bandwidth to carry 1920x1080 video at 120 Hz. To get the full 600 Hz, you'd need about 5 such cables, and I doubt your plasma display or your computer is set up for that. Check the manual for your plasma display to make sure it supports 120 Hz input signal (not just internal).

Yes. An Xbox or Xbox 360 only outputs at 60 hz, so the plasma would probably just re-display each frame 10 times, which might minimize flicker, but doesn't really make the video any smoother.

My knowledge of Plasma TVs is somewhat limited...

Plasma TVs only have 60Hz input and only 60Hz output. The reason why your particular Plasma TV is rated as "600Hz" is because it pulses 10 times each Hz cycle (or frame); so 60Hz x 10 pulses per Hz = 600Hz. "480Hz" Plasma TVs pulses 8 times every Hz cycle; so 60Hz x 8 pulses per Hz = 480Hz. This is known as Sub Field Drive. Think of pulses as a form of refreshing or updating the pixels. This helps reduce ghosting and image blur in Plasma TVs.
