Hello,

I have a Geforce 8800GTS Alpha Dog 512 Mb card which suffices for the moment but what would be a sensible value for money upgrade for 2009 since I understand that the 4850 and the 9800GTX are in the same ball park.

Thanks

Solution
You have a fine card as it is - about as good as the mid-range stock cards out right now. About the only thing that would even remotely makes sense would be an HD 4870 or GTX 260 (216). Even then the difference won't knock you socks off - it'll just make your games a little smoother.

The rest of my pc is a AMD X2 7750 BE and 4 GB RAM

a 4850 and 9800 GTX+ won't justify the money paid, you just OC your Alpha dog to match those 2 cards if any.

I suggest waiting for the 4890, and either picking that up, or a 4870 1 gig which is in a whole new category compared to the cards you stated. Or a 260 GTX:)

IF you have sli, I'd go for 260 GTX:)

The GTS 250vs. 9800gtx, its not just the 8800gt, its the 8800-9800gtx.

your getting more ram rate 1gb vs 512mb and a cheaper price or same price with more core clock and the same memory clock and its a smaller card.

So why not take 8800's off the shelf and replace them with this card..

Because it isn't worth the money. At all.

Honestly, for a 19" CRT, no current upgrade would really be worth it. If you really want to upgrade, a 4870 or GTX 260 is the minimum to upgrade to - anything less is not enough better than your current stuff to be worth it.

Are you serious?
the GTS250 and 8800GTS 512 have similar performance.

mabye the GTS 250 512 mb and the 8800 gts 512.

Core clock of a 8800gts 512mb: 675

Memory clock: 970mhz ( DDR 1940 )

fabrication : 65nm.

GTS 250 1gb

Fabrication : 55nm

Core clock : 738mhz

processor clock : 1836

Memory clock : 2200mhz

So it is a bit of an upgrade but, not worth going from 8800gts to a 250,
get the GTX 260.

make sure your psu has enough 6pin connectors though.

CRT 19" could be upgraded if possible.

Thanks for all the advice fellas.

I think Ill stick to my 8800GTS Alpha Dog for a while. I don't think there's any game other than Crysis and Assassins Creed out there that needs any better?

Some games like fsx and gta 4 would be the games to worry about, then you would need to look into both gpu and cpu,

gpu for fps and cpu for performance, there multi threaded based games so dual cores would struggle in that position.

YaY alpha dog... That card is really good 😛 I have it and it overclocks very well. So far, I got 120 Mhz of gpu power with OC'ing. Stick to it and wait for new graphic cards. than buy those 😛

Good choice.

I have the same and also play at 1280 x 1024 and frankly I can max out all games with smooth gameplay (apart from Crysis of course). Wait until summer when the Radeon HD5850/70 amd Geforec GTX360/80 comes out because even a 4870 or a GTX260 won't give you the boost to justify the outlay.

As for those who say get a GTS250 because of the extra RAM, I can't see any games needing more than 512Mb at 1280 x 1024 apart from GTA4, and your Athlon will struggle with that anyway.

I stumbled across this thread and have a similar question. Now that it's November 09, perhaps things have changed.

I have an 8800GTS 512 and a Q2C6600 running at 3GHz on an IP35 Pro MB. I run at 1920 x 1200 and I am a casual gamer. I don't want to buy a new PS until I do a full upgrade, which is probably at least six months away. I have an Antec NeoPower 550 now. What shoud I do? Keep what I have or upgrade...and to what?

Unless you are having problems playing games I would stick with what you have until prices come down, either way you would be better served starting your own thread rather than digging up an old one.
