Hey, I'm probably going to order beyerdynamic dt990 pro 250 ohm headphones. I was googling a bit and found that I need a amp for it. I also found that some motherboards (ithink it was some gigabyte mobo) can handle up to 600 ohms or something like that.

My current motherboard is msi mag b660 tomahawk wifi (link https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-B660-TOMAHAWK-WIFI-DDR4)
Do I need a amp or can my motherboard handle the 250 ohm headphones?

Thanks in advance!

Only someone who's tried the same combination could say for certain but a good guess is you will have better results with an external amp. But using the headphones won't cause any harm if that's your worry. All that happens is audio output levels will be lower than you might like.

The best thing to do is wait until after you get the headphones to see if sound levels are too low for you. If they are, before looking for an amp get an app called FXSound, it's available in the Windows Store for no charge. I'm not sure how it works but it raises audio levels considerably out of the same motherboard sound hardware. Enough that I don't need an external amp for my Sennheiser headphones.
