Ok so here is my problem. I picked up bf4 the other night and played for about a hour or so. All of a sudden my pc died like the plug was pulled, no bsod or anything. I restarted it and had a "cpu over temperature" message. I thought maybe my hs was getting dusty so I took it to the garage and blew it out. I started core temp and played a little more and noticed it was staying around 71C during game play. Idle was around during 28-32c. I've never had a problem with any other game and I play a wide variety of them. Is anyone else experiencing this? Also I was playing on high setting and Fps was great. My specs are

I7 950 stock clock stock cooler
Asus rampage iii formula
Corsair tx850w psu
Antec 1200 case
Gtx 660ti
6gigs of ram and some Ssd`s

My brother was experiencing the same problem playing BF4 beta.
He was building a "Brief case computer", But till he could get it in the brief case he had it laying out on the desk, in the open. And when he tried playing it, he could play on high for about 10 mins then his CPU wold over heat to 81C and the computer would just shut down, just like someone had pulled the plug out.

How we fixed it is, we simply... Put a cardboard box on top of it...
And problem solved. So, my guess is its a airflow issue. And a stock cooler isn't very good.

So to fix the issue, you probably need to do some cable management to improve airflow and add like 2 fans, and maybe a new CPU cooler.

The airflow is really what fixed my bro's pc. Anything to...

Hoped this helped.

Snake_Thanks for the quick replies. I have great air flow right now I'm kind of ocd about my cable management haha.

Patrick_ I'm only concerned because it shut itself down due to temps. I will test more tonight and update. I have read some people are experiencing similar issues but no concrete reason as to why

If its not the temp or airflow then it must be somthing else.
Sorry, but i can't really pen point it, that is what you have to do.

It could be anything other than the optical drives. My best bet would be Microsofts crappy hardware/software issues. Or a failing RAM stick. You could try switching out the RAM sticks.

Well i did a little research (to lazy to edit everything), and i found that the max recommended temp is 67C. So i guess your CPU is going slightly going overboard. So i think you should get a after market CPU cooler.
