BF4- VRMs Overheating, Red Screens, Computer Rebooting

Hey there, I have been having a bunch of issues with BF4.

My current system is as follows.

ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3+ AMD 760G Micro ATX AMD
FX-8350 @ 4.0 GHz (Turbo Off to prevent overheating)
8 Gigs DDR 3 Ram
Radeon 6870 @ Stock

My main issue is as follows. Every couple minutes, my CPU will throttle from 4.0 ghz to 1.4 ghz from what I assume is my MOBO VRM overheating. My mobo is the only mobo I could get that supports my CPU due to my case only being big enough for Micro ATX. Underclocking to 3.3 ghz seems to stop it, but my system seems to become more unstable, with more system rebooting. I really am not quite sure why my VRMs are overheating with BF4, as I have not had it happen in any other game after turning off my previous underclock at 4.5 ghz. No other game, even BF3 and Planetside 2, give me this issue.

I am also experiencing frequent system reboots or complete freezes. I just got two in a row, but they have been happening every few hours today. I also have experienced Red Screens and crashes, but not BSODs (yet).

I really am wondering if any of this is normal. My system has previously been very stable. I have never had a game cause my system to reboot/crash like this. I'm wondering if you guys think any of this is an issue and what you recommend should be done. Do you think most of this could be fixed by buying a case fan and blowing it on my VRMs? Or will I need to buy a new MOBO if I want to be able to play BF4?

And is it normal for a game like this to cause computer crashes/reboots? Or is it entirely the fault of my VRMs overheating?

Honestly, no. A case fan will not fix this.

A heatsink is what you need. And honestly a motherboard with a chipset that isn't 4 years old. There are plenty of boards for $50-$70 which would be a MUCH better fix.

I have turned tubro off, so it is not overclocking at all. I have to underclock it all the way down to 3.3 ghz to stop the VRM overheating.

I have a 550 Watt BFG PSU.

Yea, my MOBO VRM is the only thing thats overheating, causing the throttling.

As to the shut downs, im clueless 😛

I have the Plus version, which states that it supports 125 Watts

But im assuming that it barely is able to support 125 watts, and the 8350 is exceeding this, causing the overheating.

So do you think getting a small case fan and positioning it right above the VRMs to blow air on it would fix it? Or do you think the only solution is getting a whole new MOBO?

Ok, ill definately look to upgrade than.

One last thing, do you think my MOBO is the reason behind all the crashes/reboots? Or is this just a BF4 problem?

Are there any decent ones? I can't find a single 970 micro atx, the only 900 series that I could find was http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-985GM-GS3-FX-Mainboard-Mikro-ATX/dp/B00708Y880

And I wouldn't trust that.

I'll probably just end up getting a new case anyways, this case has no where to put any fans, and is a pain to work with.

I have one last question. I haven't gotten my new MOBO yet, but now with any game I am getting hanging/freezing even without the cpu throttling. Is it possible that my VRMs overheating have caused my CPU damage? Or is my mobo pretty much done? Is there any danger to my CPU if my VRM is damaged/overheating?

Ok, i'll play it safe than. I think its fine, its not giving me issues while im not playing games. It just scared me for a minute there 😛
