Big memory dilemna!!! Life or Death Situation!!

I'm planning on building a new AMD DDR Athlon System in the near future, and I've been scouting out different mobos lately. Some of the most recent mobos have four memory slots, but will only support up to two Unbuffered modules. I want the most memory as possible without having to resort to registered ecc. Since I'll be using my system in the home, I don't want it to slow down 2% with ecc error checking. Are there any 512mb unbuffered modules that would allow me to squeeze in as much unbuffered memory as possible. Another question would be whether or not there are any chipsets that support over two unbuffered memory modules? Thanks..Sean

I don't know what OS you are planning on using, but a word of caution if you will use any Win9x/Me OS's <A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q253/9/12.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Q253912&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98SE" target="_new">Q253912</A> don't exceed 512 MB or you will have a "Please Kill Me Situation". Also, checkout the <A HREF="http://www.amd.com" target="_new">http://www.amd.com</A> site for the recommended Athlon M/B's. then do your homework. BTW Win2k/XP will manage your excess memory nicely.

Currently I'm using Win2K, but I'll be switching over to WinXP Professional eventually. I just get frustrated that mobo manufacturers would include four slots, but you can only take advantage of two of them. Is it a software problem or a hardware problem? Could an updated Bios down the road fix the no more than 2 unbuffered modules glitch?

Try 2 big sticks of 256mb PC2400 on a SiS 735. then your set for a while.

Hey F,
The 4 slots vs. 2 slots, is a Hardware Problem. The Problem lies in the Chipset and cannot be fixed by the Bios(flashing/update). What you need is a New Chipset! From my understanding it is very difficult to design a chipset that can utillize more than 3 slots of DDR. The other thing that I have heard, is that some retailers have had a high "RMA/Return/Defective" rate for 512 MB sticks of all brands of DDR..... I don't know if this is true, but the 512 MB sticks sure cost a pretty penney. Oh yeah, the Life & Death thing worked on me, I looked.

Well, I checkout some M/B's that offered 3 DIMM slots for the 1.4 Athlon DDR SDR and the <A HREF="http://www.epox.com/html/english/products/motherboard/ep-8kha.asp" target="_new">EP-8KHA Rev 1.3</A> seemed to standout. I like Epox M/B's but I don't know all the details on this specific one. You may want to check it out for yourself. One question, Why do you want more than 512MB of DRAM? Are you making a Titanic movie or something....LOL?
