Bigger screen with same resolution affects FPS?

I'm really confused regarding something. I have a gaming laptop with a GTX960M. I have about 400 FPS while playing minecraft on it's native monitor. When I connect my laptop to a bigger monitor with the same resolution there is a significant FPS drop and the game becomes more choppy.

I thought that this should not affect FPS? I heard that only resolution changes cause FPS difference. I also display content only on the second monitor so I really don't get what the problem is here. And I was wondering how I could fix this. Does anybody know what's going on here?

Thanks in regards

MANY laptops do not utilize the GPU for their HDMI slots - they are integrated only.

The monitor size change does not impact anything, only resolution like you read about.
That said many laptops do not have 1080p screens, which would mean an external could increase demand a bit.

But again, i think the more likely culprit is that your outputs are connected to your integrated graphics, not your discrete card.

EDIT: what is the make and model of your laptop exactly? we can try and find a spec sheet that would give us some info.

Also I know that the game is using the GPU still. On the second monitor. It just feels a lot more choppy and it's not smooth anymore. It's not the monitor either. Something is really draining more GPU power or something I think.
