This is a bit of an odd question, but I'm currently researching the most high spec PC it's possible to currently build, for a UK tech mag. I was wondering if anyone on here knew that the biggest purchasable CRT would be? I've trawled the web a fair bit but haven't come up with any four foot giant that really stands out.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Any really big tv could be used as a monitor, the resolution would just suck (some more than others). Higher end HD tvs wouldn't be to bad though.
Such as:
Samsung TX-P3264 32" HDTV with DVI connection.

I was considering a CRT widescreen TV around 3 years ago, I believe it was something like 41" and supported 1280x720 resolution natively. It also offered a VGA input, which I believe was restricted to a 60Hz refresh rate (due to it being an NTSC TV).

I'm in the same boat. I have an 8 year old 21" (20" viewable) and would like something along the line of a 24" viewable but the only thing like that I have found is a discontinued sony wide screen. They are putting so much effort into producing new LCDs that still don't compete with CRTs it is frustrating the bejesus out of me. Why Viewsonic and others didn't ever start making PC CRTs (not wide screen) that were 24" or bigger I never found out. TVs pretending to be PC monitors do look horrible so that rules out that option.

My 8 year old monitor still has better color and refresh than the newest LCDs. I'm not against LCD technology progressing, I'm just bummed that they put so much effort into the LCDs that they seem to have forgotten about CRTs. It seems a shame that the older technology still has more untapped potential.

I contacted Viewsonic to mention that their biggest CRT had a 3 year old tube in it and they said it is fine so they have no intention of replacing that model any time soon.

Just go for a plasma screen. It can't quite match crt resolution but it will be the same/better quality and responsiveness at a larger size :)

A plasma wouldn't be the best option for us due to the limited screen life and the burn in problems particularly since this will be connected to a PC.

I don't know whether they have the biggest wide screen CRT, but the Philips outlet store has some pretty good deals on refurbished models.
http://outlet.philips.com/

For example, a 30" wide screen flat screen CRT HDTV ready with an HDMI connector can be had for $456 US. Model #30PW8502/37B

I would imagine anyone willing to pay $500 for a video card they will replace in 2 years would be willing to pay a good amount for a screen that should last them at LEAST 5 years. So why don't the monitor/screen manufacturers go gaga about making something gamers and graphic developers would want.

I would imagine I'm not the only person who would like something say about 24" that has great colors, high resolution 1600, a fast refresh - 8ms or less and in a standard monitor format. The wide screen models are nice but how about the standard format too?

Frankly I'd buy a CRT if I could get one designed for a PC (not a TV HDTV or otherwise pretending to be a monitor). The only reason is that I've tested the $1000 dell LCD everyone is mentioning and while it is nice, it doesn't compare in colors to a CRT. Also I know some people would like the wide screen format but since I do work on it as well, a standard format would be better for me.

Just me whining, not very productive but I figure if just three people started jumping up and down - it would be a movement.

BTW - I've e-mailed Philips, LG, Samsung, Viewsonic, BenQ and Sony to (not whining) to find out if they have anything on the way that meets these specs. I'll be sure to post back if I hear anything. Of course if enough people were to e-mail them, they might realize the market niche is ready. I understand they work together on some screens so asking each individually certainly doesn't hurt.

PS - if any of you are thinking about this model, you are correct, it does
come close but the refresh rate is much too slow.

LCD's are probably way more profitable. Almost everyone wants one and they might be a lot cheaper to produce and thus have higher margins.

23"-24" LCD's go for as high as $2000. I got one for $860 that retails for $1200. This implies that the profit margins are really high.
