It may be the DVD player. Open your Computer Management and check your system in event viewer. Look for errors in there to indicate a hardware problem.

Assuming you know your way around comps:

1. Does the DVD show in the post messages?
2. Is the DVD present on one of the IDE channels in the BIOS?
3. Is the DVD present in Device Manager (right-click My Computer - Properties - Hardware)?

If present in DM, remove the IDE channel that it's on (under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers) and reboot. This will freshly install the drivers for it.

If it's not in the BIOS, crack open your box and make sure the IDE and power attachments are firmly seated (check mobo connection too).

Still no luck after all that, remove it and take it to a friends' comp and "temporarily" install it there. See if it works. If it does, then there is a Registry issue.

Get back to us.

You can also try this:

GOOGLE this file XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe; download it to your desktop and run it.

- Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer
© Doug Knox - 11/11/2002

Usage: Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

This utility is only intended for Windows® XP.

INSTALLED SERVICE PACK 2.....andnow its running perfect. I guess there was a simple driver problem.

Although another problem is that I CAN SEE MY C: DRIVE BUT THEN IN "MY COMPUTER" I CAN NOT SEE A D DRIVE.

Even when m hard drive is 160 gigs its only showing that c has 40 gigs.....whers the rest ofit and why cant i see it?
help?

Did you format the rest of the drive for a D: partition? Or just format the C: and left the rest alone.

You need to format the rest of the drive.

My Computer Icon * Right Click *> Manage > Diskmanagement > .... (or something)
