He's actually more or a realist than that, in my experience, but from
the absence of comment about not just deer, but grey squirrel and ruddy
duck, both of which appeared last night, I would assume that the
producer has decided what he wants the tone of the programmes to be and
that is clearly not to make it an "issues" series of programmes.

He's been reading notes right from the start, including on Bass Rock. I
didn't get the impression he was trying to hide them, just glancing down
rather a lot making sure he had his facts right. Both Bill and Kate have
notes in their hands, too, but are perhaps better than Simon at
memorising them inbetween to-camera pieces.
