Bios necessity

Anyone seen this on BBC?

So why do we need it?

Just as the article says: to make booting up PC's and such a lot faster, namely smaller, more mobile devices like tablets that are taking over the world. I'd rather hit the power button on my laptop or desktop and have it be ready to use in 5 seconds rather than 30 or so.

The caption on the picture says the BIOS dates back to the earliest days of the IBM PC - 1981 in other words. It actually dates back earlier than that - back to the CP/M-80 days.
