BIOS not recognizing usb or sata

Hi all,

So this is my 1st build and after getting everything together and working, I thought, when I boot to bios nothing is detected apart from the keyboard. No usb sticks (which I'm trying to install the os from) no hdd or even cd drive.

Seems like there is no power going to the sata devices, I've tried separate new power an sata cables, moved them to separate sata ports. Nothing.

Tried the keyboard in every usb slot I've got, works fine. Try the usb stick in any of then and nothing comes up in bios.

Mobo: MSI Z97 Gaming 5
HDD: Western Digital 1tb blue
CPU: Intel i7-4790k

Many thanks in advance!

Hey there, deccorvo.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do about it besides trying out different devices, to see if the issue still persists and trying out the drive with a different computer, to see if it's properly recognized. You should also make sure that all the components have been properly connected. It could be a mobo problem or a PSU issue if you don't get enough power to spin the drives.

Try resetting your BIOS/UEFI, to see if that fixes things up.

Please let me know how everything goes.

Thank Boogieman_WD

I've tried a different usb hdd which powered up fine and was visible in the bios so I know it's not the actual usb hubs.

Unfortunately trying the sata devices on a different pc isn't an option as this is all I've got. I've rebuilt it 3 times now so everything should all be connected.

I've got another psu which works fine but gives me the same problem and this mobo is literally 3 days old, my last one came dead out the box so managed to get it replaced thankfully!

Reset the cmos via battery and the jumper to no avail and tried a 100 different setting in the bios/uefi.

Haven't got a clue what it could be

It seems that you're using the Windows Media Tool to install an OS in your new system, right?

Setting aside your observations about the BIOS/UEFI not detecting this or that component, what precisely happens when you attempt to boot to the WMT containing the OS setup files?

A black screen? Error messages of one kind or another? What?

Arthog,
There's no os installed at all and the usb is direct from Microsoft I haven't made it myself.

On booting I can either enter bios or it runs to the UFI she'll with the following error:

EFI Shell version 2.2.31 [4.655]
Current running mode 1.1.2
Map: Cannot find required map name.

Press ESC in (1-5) seconds to skip startup.nsh, any other key to continue.

Pressing anything just gives me

Shell>

Then awaits a command but nothing works, only exit, which takes me back to the bios/uefi screen.

You're using the Windows Media Tool (a flash drive) that contains the Windows OS installation files. I fully understand that "the usb is direct from Microsoft (and that) you haven't made it (yourself)", i.e., the files have been downloaded/installed from Microsoft.

1. Stick that USB flash drive in one of your PC's USB ports and power-on your PC.

2. Of course you will have installed the HDD or SSD that you plan to install the OS on. Ensure it's the ONLY drive installed at this time.

3. As the system boots access your system's boot menu by pressing (tapping) the appropriate F key on your keyboard. It might be the F11 key; it might be the F12 key; it might be the Esc key; it might be another key. Check your motherboard's User Manual for the appropriate key.

4. When the boot menu displays there should be a listing of the flash drive on that menu. Click on the listing that indicates the flash drive is a USB device. If the flash drive is also listed as a UEFI and/or a Windows Boot Manager device - IGNORE THAT LISTING. Capiche?

5. Hopefully you will be able to access the Windows OS setup program.

Thanks for that ArtPog, didn't work though.

Have a look at this

They're my boot options and ignoring the UEFI as you said I get thrown into PXE boot where it just crashes on me loops on me.

Even with only the hdd I want to install the os on plugged into the mobo, it still doesn't register that anything is there, no hdd or usb.

Think it could be another mobo issue?

@ArtPog's instructions are top–notch. If you're getting the message for the "proper boot device", you might have an issue with the flash drive. You could try creating a different installation media (either a different USB flash drive or a DVD), to see if the same thing happens. You could also try booting to Ubuntu Live (this is basically a portable, bootable, freeware version of Linux), to check if it works.

It's possible that a defective or corrupt Windows Media Tool is the cause of the problem as Boogieman indicates, so as he suggests work with another flash drive to rule out that possibility.

The error message you're receiving indicates the possibility of a variety of causes for the problem you're experiencing...
1. Review your build to ensure all your SATA connections have been properly installed and correctly secured. Especially check the connections to the HDD. Substitute another HDD SATA data cable for the presently installed one. Change the connection of the HDD to another SATA connector (port).
2. A defective HDD. Check out the health of the WD HDD with WD's HDD diagnostic test that you can download from WD's site.
3. Check the BIOS boot priority setting to ensure there's no setting involving a boot to a network device.

Thanks guys that helped!!!

The flash drive was dead and I managed to borrow a friend laptop to create a new one, now I got around the wd hdd by just buying a samsung m2 sdd, which installed the os to and it's currently running from.

But after reviewing the build, swapping the sata data and power cables over, I've got 4 of each, the hdd and blue ray player still aren't being recognised!

I bought a sata to usb cable to see if they were completely dead and the BR player is giving me nothing at all, but the hdd is recognised in my main C: drive under my computer as a generic usb mass storage device but! It's coming up as if it has no volume or space on it.

Is there anything I should download to review it or what can I do to fix the 2 drives? Could I just be super unlucky and they've both died on me...

Thanks, deccorvo
