so i have been having a weird issue with my computer which i built about a year ago. i decided to overclock about 6 months ago, and came out with a very stable OC at 4.4ghz / 1.26vcore. a new bios update came out from gigabyte so i decided to update, i forgot to reset my overclock when i did this so im not sure if this may have corrupted the update. the bios however reset after the update, so i then overclocked again with the same settings and everything was normal until about a week into the OC. i turned on my computer, a few seconds after it reset itself, but turned back on. i entered the bios and got a boot error, i think it said it was related to 'uncompatible' settings, whatever that means. i then re OC'd and it kept happening every few weeks. i later updated my bios once again because a new update was released and re OC'd my cpu. the same thing happened, my computer crashed after turning on, but this time the bios settings didnt reset, but rather changed, and i did not get the same boot/OC error i did before (mind you, this happens every few weeks, sometimes it took longer to happen). also, whenever i save profiles to my bios, they reset when this happens. this crash happened again today and everything reset, but my voltage was at a static 2.80 which i did some testing with earlier but decided to change to dynamic vcore. it absolutely makes no sense to me. so basically, my bios settings are resetting, and sometimes even changing back to old settings which i have tested with. also my saved profiles after every crash reset. i decided to complete reset my cmos today by removing the battery for 10 minutes and putting it back in. i started up my PC and it shut off and turned back on again, i went into bios and it said settings have been reset. is that normal for it to reset like this after removing/reinserting the battery? any contributions will help. at this point doing a complete windows reinstall is out of the question, as i dont have the money to rehire the guy who does my comp stuff. i havent really tried to just keep stock settings and see if this happens again, so thats what im going to do. the bios is now fully reset so it may not happen again. i dont really think its unstable OC because i have tested the OC's ALOT and they seem very stable. my computer has NEVER actually crashed in game or anything.

Solution
A BIOS recovery is supposed to do it... It's supposed to erase the update and reuse the default uneraseable BIOS code.

Type: "gigabyte z170 gaming 3" in a search enigne and click on the Gigabyte mobo model product link... in the Gigabyte page > Support > Downloads > Use Manual > Open or download the manual and search in the BIOS section for the proper method to Recover the BIOS.

If the issue still shows up, try a different BIOS reset method... a web search can come up with slightly different methods for different mobo brands or models... just make sure it's for a Gigabyte dual Bios and if it differs from the adviced method in the manual, try it. One I use and has worked for different motherboards is:

1. Remove the AC cord...
• Incompatible settings in your case probably mean a OC error.. conflicting settings.

• It is perfectly normal for settings to revert back to default if you remove the battery as the battery is what saves the settings in bios memory.

• The Windows OS is unrelated to the BIOS so it has nothing to do with the issue.

• If your BIOS is now remained at the original stock settings you should not expect any more trouble.

• If you want to overclock again: the Intel i5-6600k is said to easily overclock to 4.5GHz at maximum Turbo speeds without needing to adjust voltages... so the BIOS may have registered an OC setting error.. I don't regularly overclock so I don't have enough experience to advice you on propper OC settings, so my advice is; Post your questions on the Overclocking forum to get propper advice.

update: it is not my OC because when i turned on my pc today with stock clocks it shut off but turned back on again. so i am thinking it is the bios version and not my cmos battery because it happened only after i updated to bios version f20, do you know how to go back to an old bios version?

2. remove the BIOS jumper (don't forget the pins it's normaly on),
3. press the power button for a minute,
4. replace everything back and start the computer...
A variation of this method is; after point 3, wait 10 minutes before replacing power cord, battery and jumper.

If this BIOS update is not the first you've done, you may want to reuse that BIOS version so try this method that suggests using a floppy disk but you can use a USB or CD instead.

The thing is that it says on there that you cannot revert back to an older bios after updating to f20. So I just updated to f22 and I'm waiting to see if that fixed it
