IBM Netvista S42 P4 2.53 with 512MB RAM

Was using a GeForce MX 440 with 64MB RAM
Upgraded to a GeForce FX5200OC with 256MB RAM

I only have a PCI slot, so both card are PCI.

My question concerns the video setting in the BIOS.
If I bring them up, there are two catagories with options.

1. Shared System Memory (currently 1024K, but also choices for 512K or
8192K)
2. Graphics Aperture (currently 64MB, but also choices for 32MB, 128MB and
256MB)

Would I get any better performance if I change anything here?

Thanks.

I'll have a go but maybe wrong so keep reading in case someone comes up with
some
thing better! ;o) Also try to find out the manufacturer & model of the
motherboard as this will help people to help you.

1. Shared System Memory

If I'm correct this sounds like the memory that's used for an onboard video
but you have a seperate video card (you did with the MX 440). *If* you're
using a motherboard with build in video disable it and this should mean
you've got more RAM for applications.

2. Graphics Apeture - hmmm puzzling this as you say you've only got PCI
slots and this refers to a setting connected with AGP garphics cards and not
PCI garphics cards. The general reccomendation is this should be set to half
your (I think) graphics card memory - in your case 128MB. I don't think this
setting is too important but keep it at 64MB or above.

Thanks for your thoughts.
It seems reasonable that a higher setting on both would be good.

I'll wait a while to see if there are other suggestions, and
then give it a try and see what happens.

This setting only applies to motherboard-integrated video, which you are not
using. Change it all you want and it wouldn't make a difference.

This only applies to AGP video cards, which you are not using. Change it all
you want and it wouldn't make a difference. 🙂

Isn't hardware setup easy?

Number 1- How much of system ram you want to give to the video card (1Meg , 1/2 Meg or 8 Meg) .
This is for an onboard video card only, should have no bearing on your card as it has its own
memory. (Sounds like there is an onboard video card that you are not using. )
Number 2 - I believe is only for AGP cards keep at 64.

Some motherboards will have onboard AGP graphics but no AGP slot.

Onboard AGP graphics using system RAM. Does it really make a difference how
big the aperture is?
