Okay guys.. Stupid question probably. I have this motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...dh6YoKvTDfmQnnF-jmlCGbF8A&Item=9SIA4RE8KA0890

And I just had my i7-3770 come in the mail. I am currently using an i5-2320, and I posted on a forum about the CPU swap before, and people told me I needed to update my BIOS. Now, I've fiddled quite a bit with PC's, but never updated a bios... Can anybody explain how I can do it without screwing my system up?

Are you 100% sure you are required to do a BIOS update? I mean you can just swap it out now and see if it boots up or not. If it does then you don't need to do an update unless it enables more features that you don't have currently. If it doesn't boot up then simply swap back to your older cpu , and start her up again then in your operating system of choice download the bios drivers and run them. Then when you reboot it should be updated, then turn off and then proceed with the 3770 swap again. Good luck!

Everybody has told me that I need a bios update to run 3rd gen intel. However, I was gonna download it to a USB and use a USB to update it... But theoretically, I can just boot it up with the i5 in it, and download it huh? And then do the swap anyways right? I just go to MSI's webpage and download the BIOS update? But how would I activate it?

Okay. So I had my brother buy an i7-3770 to upgrade his PC from an i5-2320. He is currently using this motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...dh6YoKvTDfmQnnF-jmlCGbF8A&Item=9SIA4RE8KA0890

I installed the CPU without updating BIOS, and it seemed to boot up perfectly fine and work. However, it is only registering as a quad core, with only 4 threads, and not a hyperthreaded quad core with 8 threads. So do I have to update the BIOS? And how would I do so?

  1. Clear the CMOS by removing the CMOS battery or the CMOS jumper. After that reboot the PC to check the cpu to see what happens. If you still get the same: 4 cores without any threads.
  2. Then install the cpu z to check again. CPU Z https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html If you still get the same. Recommend to return the CPU, because it may have problem.

Keep in mind, the MB can support the i7 3770 without the BIOS update.
