Which FREE antivirus software should I go for?

Use windows defender.
It is unobtrusive and effective.
Recent tests showed that defender was tops in detecting known viruses.

I've had Kaspersky Free running for 18 months or so, and CPU usage is still at the same 1-2% as when running WIndows Security (aka, Defender).....

Kaspersky does quite well in testing against assorted threats, and, it will block known bad downloads, websites. ransomware, etc...
