I used bitlocker to encrypt a few of my drives and then stored the recovery keys on a USB stick. Then encrypted the stick with bitlocker and stored the recovery information of that to my password manager. When I tried to access the USB the first time, it asked for the password and I was able to unlock it. But now when I try again, it says "Please inset disk into USB". No matter what I do it acts like the drive isn't there. So far I've :

  • Tried other USB ports
Tried inserting it into other computers
    Change the drive letter
    Ran sfc scan

I have no idea what else I can do to try to get my thumb drive to show up.

Solution
Disk 3 and 4 represent empty USB ports, so it looks like your USB drive has failed. As an example here is my disk management at the moment:

My disks 2-5 represent my empty usb ports (you can't see 4 and 5 on my screenshot due to the size). I don't have any usb devices plugged in at the moment.

One thing you can try is to gently press down on the usb drive with your finger, bending it down maybe 1 or 2 degrees (don't break it). Sometimes the contacts on the usb stick start to go bad and it no longer seats properly in the port, and thus isn't recognized. This happened to me once and I ran across this solution. It worked for me and while continuing to press down on the usb stick I drug the...

It does detect the presence of the drive, but that's it.

In Disk Management it shows the drive, empty with no partition and no size. The only thing I can to is either: a)eject it or b)change the drive letter, both of which I've done with no difference made.

edit: It looks jut like drives 3 and 4 of this photo

You just have to apply continuous pressure while the copying process takes place.
