Bitlocker Encrytption Frozen

I started to encrypt my external HDD using bitlocker, and at 0.8%, it froze and now will not close under any circumstances except unplugging the drive. Ive tried task manager, and even the kill command in command prompt (It says the program isn't open). When I unlock the drive after reconnecting it, the frozen window opens again. I want to know if there is a way to fix this without losing the contents of the drive.

Have you considered that it may be a dead drive, or even just a bad cable or connection.

But....encryption that dies part way through...bad prognosis for the data.

The drive was working perfectly fine before I started the encryption. Even if I can't recover the data, is there a way to close the frozen encryption process?

Disregard the encryption.
Delete all the partitions. Possibly even as far as DBAN.
