Question bitlocker issues

hey all,

wanted to discuss bitlocker. i have a few questions
i have the os (win10) installed on a samsung 980 pro m.2 and i use samsung 870 evo ssd for data
now i want to enable encryption. first priority is the data drive, 2nd priority is the os drive

from what i read i see that in order to use hardware i need to reset the drive

1. is that true? i cant use hw unless i format?
2. i see in some places that the hw encryption is brittle. should i use software anyway?
3. whats the performance diff between hw and sw here?
4. in some places i read that the drive hw encryption is not much useful anymore as the tpm does almost the same. is that true?
