Hey all,
Last night I tried plugging in my phone (Samsung A54) into the front usb c port of my computer. At first for the first few seconds it seemed normal with the computer asking the usual open file explorer to view the phone's file system etc. But short while later an error popped up on the computer saying something like usb c wire malfunction, please use another wire. So I tried using another one but nothing would show up on the computer's end. On the phone's side it would say please check the plug and it would be slow charging. I kept trying but still the same issue, there were a couple of times it reverted to fast charging but still not able to see anything on the windows end.
The only other times I have done this was a month ago when I first got the phone, as I have since used a wall plug. (though there were no issues then) I need to do this now as I have to do some android dev work.
Anyway, so I tried plugging the A54 into the BACK usbc port, the one that is part of the mobo, and everything works fine?!
So I unplugged the phone and went to sleep thinking its an issue with the front usb port, but when I wake up today and went to wake my computer from sleep, a new error popped up at the system tray saying power surge on usb port. This is despite the phone being disconnected. I tried plugging the phone into the front usb, still the same problem. But now to do some testing, I also additionally plugged my older phone (A51) in the back usb port to test. Back port charges fine as expected.
This is where the strange events start. So I turned on the older phone (currently battery symbol) and I hear the usb connection sound on windows end. But now the audio starts spazzing out and it goes to BSOD (kmode exception not handled), and it indicates there is a driver issue with my Scarlett Solo (https://focusrite.com/products/scarlett-solo). To give a short explanation, the Scarlett is basically a preamp that you can connect audio devices to, like my headphones, or sometimes when I want to use my electric guitar with my PC. So I disconnect the Scarlett from the back USB A port, and turn the PC back on, and strangely now both the phones connected to the front and back usb c ports work completely fine? (can access the files and charge normally).
What makes it even stranger is that I had this Scarlett plugged in when I first got my phone, and back then I don't seem to recall any issue with the front usbc port when I had the phone plugged in.
I can't make head or tails of this whole thing. If it could be related, I have been having power issues with this PC since the start whereby it would reboot sometimes when trying to wake from sleep, This issue went away when I turned off XMP.
