I could not help noticing that a number of items which I have purchased from Amazon in the last year, now are on offer as Black Friday deals.

Wondered if I had been unwise, and maybe could have got a better deal had I waited.

So, I checked this out.

None of the items are being offered for less than what I paid earlier in the year!

Are we being conned by retailers increasing prices in advance, so they can attempt to lure us to purchase because we think we are being offered some illusionary advantage?

Often, yes.

I've bought the same item significantly less expensive in July vs BF.

Consider this:
MSRP - $150
Every day price - $140
Random sale in July - $90
BF - $120 ($30 off MSRP !!!!!)

Yes, I agree not always. Have just found a Blu ray movie at 20% discount which is better than what I have been able to source hitherto.

Guess as so often, it is a case of caveat emptor.

BF has morphed from a single day, to the period of 1 Nov to 15 Jan.

I'm in the middle of speccing a whole new system.
Documented parts prices have not changed in 2 weeks.
I'm not in a real hurry, so I'll see what happens this Friday. If a particular part gets a price drop, great. If not, I buy it anyway.

Which way are you leaning, USAF......265K or AMD?

I'm seriously checking too. Can get a 14600K, MSI 760M board, and 32 GB Corsair for 445 on a Newegg Combo Deal (about 70 off standard price), but resisting so far. Core Ultra deals aren't much yet.

Black Friday is a big spectacle and nothing more than marketing. The hype and madness around discounts annoyed me deeply.

there are some good deals to be had, but you have to be savvy to spot them, a lot of the times shops just stock up specially to encourage shopping madness, then everything has sold out for not much less (10% at best) than it is normally, and it makes it hard to find certain things until January, I can never decide if it's good or annoying

Well, I assume that these traders are in business in order to turn a profit.

So it is only to be expected that they will try to incentivise us to buy.

My only gripe is when they try to persuade us that we are making a saving, when the comparison is with a price which is not at all typical of what we would otherwise have paid. After all, is that not being a tad dishonest?

This why an informed shopper looks at them and laughs.
