Black Mirror

Is there anybody out there who can help me with the Starforce copyprotection
on The Black Mirror dutch edition? Game will not run at all. When clicking
the BM-starticon, Starforce looks for the code on the BM-cd 1, but will not
end this procedure. It stops responding after approx. 1/4 of the scale. Then
the pc switches to the desktop again. Looked at the Dreamcatcher website for
updates etc. and found a Starforce driver update. Installing these drivers
doesn't help, still the same problem. Re-installing the game doesn't help
either. I've played an adventure before which uses Starf***ingforce and that
game ran well.
System: Win98SE (updated); Geforce 4 MX 440 (driver 4543); Soundblaster
Live!; Asus P4B266 motherboard; Intel P4 2.0 Ghz.; Direct-X 9.0c. No ad- or
spyware infections.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Greetings, E-Cie.

S**tForce probably doesn't like your CD drive.
Broken Sword 3 (the US version uses StarForce v3) would not work
with one of my drives (the quiet one). It worked on the noisy one,
but only 2/3 of time.

Another possible problem is if you have emulation software
installed. BS3 wouldn't work while I had Disk Dump installed.
I even had to go into the registry and delete a key the
Disk Dump uninstall left behind before S***Force would let me
start the game.

I don't know of a crack for the Dutch version. Gamecopyworld
has a crack for the German version, but I don't know if it
would work with the Dutch version. If you use the crack, you
first have to remove the S***Force drivers that it installs
the first time you start the game.

Thanks Jenny for your quick response. And yes, it was BS3 i've played before
and that game ran fine on my system. I read something on the net of problems
with the new Half-life game S***force 3.0 protected?). It seems that it
cannot cope with DVD-burners. Could it be the same with BM? I installed the
game on a NEC 3500A DVD-writer and for the second time on my LiteOn LTD163
DVD-player. Can it be that i need a plain CD-Rom player to play the game?
I knew about the crack for BM and tried the English version because the
game's speach is in English (only subtitled in Dutch), and uninstalled the
S***forcedrivers before proceeding but that did not help.
Oh, and there is no emulationsoftware running on my machine (didn't think of
that!).

First thing you should do is upgrade the firmware on all of your cd/dvd
drives. That will solve many of these sorts of issues, and is a good idea
anyway.

But if you're in Australia, you may have had the UK version of BS3,
which uses SecuROM rather than StarForce.

Half Life 2 uses "Steam" and online activation.

A DVD player should work, as long as it isn't a writer.
Of course there were various drives wouldn't work with it,
including some plain CD drives.

Too bad. Maybe a firmware update would work for the DVD drive,
like RMS suggests, but I wouldn't count on it. Good luck though.

Nero? Some copy "protections" don't like newer versions of
Nero because they include a drive imager.

I lived in the Netherlands then, and still do 🙂

problem....:-((

Nero 6 Enterprise Edition runs on my machine. Could it be that bad then?
Well, i will go on with my "little quest". Thanks a lot all of you for
responding!

One more suggestion. Disable Cryptographic Services in WinXP Services. As
I recall, this solved a similar problem with RealMyst installations.

Well, after a long correspondence with Easy Computing (the company that
releases BM in Belgium and The Netherlands) they came with the solution that
i should send the game to them, so they could try to find out what is wrong
with it. Before i did, i replaced my LiteOn DVD-Rom player with a (new)
LiteOn CD-Rom player. And YES! EUREKA! The game runs fine now (as long
as....). I thought you wanted to know, just in case....
And now i will try to get a refund for installing new hardware just to run a
game... ;-)
Thanks to all for your help anyway.
