Question Black screen after legacy driver install

Good day!

I have older computer with Haswell 4th generation. I had to reinstall Windows due to it repeatedly attempting to Autorepair. After fresh install, it worked for a short time, and then developed black screen when I tried to install Adrenalin AMD driver with version I downloaded at AMD site for my graphic card.

The card installed is AMD Radeon R9270X. The computer is booting fine without the graphic card. I attempted to install Adrenalin again but it shows some kind of error. It does not show in add/remove programs. I attempted to run AMD Utility to remove AMD software and it only found Display Driver- this is likely came from Asus website when I installed drivers after Windows install. So it removed Display Driver.

Now what should I do? Should I try to install Adrenalin again or is there something else? What do I do if it not installs? Thank you.

Specs;
ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
ASUS HD7850
THERMALTAKE SP-850M
INTEL CORE I7 3770K
16G CORSAIR Vengeance
240G INTEL 520 SSD
2Tb Seagate Barracuda x2
MICROSO

Sig space specs can and will change over time, when that happens, this thread and it's relevant suggestions will be rendered moot to the end user in the same boat as you're in now. It's with this in mind that we asl users to pass on their system's specs in their thread's body. I shoehorned the info, hope you don't mind.

As for your OS, where did you source the installer from? I'd try and recreate your bootable USB installer to rule out a corrupt installer and install the OS in offline mode;

the same applies for Windows 10.

With that in mind, install the rest of your platform's drivers in an elevated command, while in offline mode. Elevated command = Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard?

I attempted to run AMD Utility to remove AMD software and it only found Display Driver
You're advised to use DDU to remove all GPU drivers(Intel, Nvidia and AMD) in Safe Mode, then manually install the latest GPU driver sourced from AMD's support site in an elevated command.

Thank you for your reply. I did not think that specs would matter other than processor to show generation and year (Haswell, 2014- i7 4770K).
CPU: 4770K
CPU cooler: Stock
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-PRO (V EDITION) LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL
AMD Radeon R9270X

The OS- I made bootable USB with OS install- around October last year it says on the file. Could be different USB. lol. I got it from Microsoft site, but could do it again... The Windows 10 had problem with installing updates- I had another thread about it and finally I agreed to remove graphic card and was able to boot to Windows. It was failing that comprehensive features update and .NET, until I removed graphic card and was able to see what is going on but I had to use Restore points several times to remove update- it probably is not good install any way. I am collecting info to know what to do when away from desktop. The full story is here if anybody care but I was not getting replies so I wanted to know what to do with graphic driver. I am not a gamer, I need this computer for my medical office to access electronic health records and I have some patients scheduled and no computer at the exam room.

Thank you for sharing the video. At the end, it says, "Just like in old Win 10 days" which makes me think there is a way to install W10 without doing the trick?

Regarding the drivers. This is Asus motherboard and all drivers come from Asus Motherboard page. I have these drivers saved on the drive. But: There is ASUS .exe filr and regular Microsoft driver for everything, and I used Asus version- my understanding it was optimized for this motherboard. Do I still need to run it as Administrator?

Also, it removed Display Driver, so should I not install Display Driver before Adrenalin?

Now, before I try another W10 reinstall, I would like to try to install Adrenalin one more time to see if it installs now that that Display driver is removed. Thank you again.

The good news and the bad news. After removing Display Driver with AMD CleanUp Utility, the graphic card worked. Installed Graphic card back, attempted to install Adrenalin- it went in black screen after or during installing Display Driver- The same is what happened the first time. Help! Now what? Are you saying that reinstalling OS will some how solve it?

Another odd thing is that I downloaded that same file the other day and saved it in different folder but it was not able to read the new file- feels like it was looking in a folder with the first version. Thank you.

It is reproducible issue, now definitely related to display driver and Adrenalin. However, wasn't I supposed to install Adrenalin in Safe mode? So the latest version on AMD website for R9 270X that I downloaded yesterday does not run at all- it says, "Unable to open file for writing C/AMD/Radeon-software-Adrenalin-2020-22.6.1-Win10... But the same file my son downloaded in October runs (not in Safe mode0), but causes black screen soon as it installed.

I tried to download older driver, version 21. something. It did not want to install in safe mode, also gave me error, saying I have some restrictions (I assumed it was due to Safe Mode?) but when I restarted not in Safe mode, it went to black screen, so it did install that driver. I removed Display driver and Driver Packages, and now I dont know what to do. Hope you can help. Thank you.

There's always the more limited WHQL driver that's automatically installed from WindowsUpdate if you wait long enough. Don't expect Adrenalin control panel or translating OpenGL to Vulkan or anything like that but DirectX obviously works fine.

As a last resort there are also the NimeZ modded drivers.

I left the office with this computer working without AMD Display driver, with video card connected to monitors. Come back today- still working. In my Windows updates it has AMD Display Driver. I was hoping this driver would just install with no harm. But nope- it went Black Screen at me again. Can I avoid installing it? I did click Install myself, I dont know if it will install itself with Updates or if it would just sit there inactive in updates, but this would be irritating as it is not optional update. I guess I have to create new USB installation media and reinstall Windows and see what happens? And maybe not install VGA driver? It is the only thing I installed that related to video in any way...
