Black screen due to fried motherboard? Pics inside

About a week ago the screen on my HP 6830s went completely black after I put it in hibernation. I replaced the LCD with a new one and also replaced the inverter but the screen was still black. The computer boots up fine and it loads up windows, I think.

I just took apart the whole laptop and it seems like it is fried near the USB pin plug. Is it possible that my external hard drive fried my motherboard? I was watching a video which was on the external hard drive when the screen died.

That definitely looks like burn marks to me. Plugging an external hard drive into a laptop should not be a problem, it's done all he time.
