Hello, and thank you ahead of time for anyone that assists me.

I recently replaced my old gtx660 (which died) with an rx480.

After installing the rx480 (two days ago) I've been able to play high-stress games, with no problem at all, for a few hours at a time too.

Question and Background information:

Moments ago I left my computer idling with my browser open for probably about 45 minutes, returning to find my computer screen black and the fans blowing at max. I'm wondering what a variety of people here may think the culprit is. I asked on here recently if my PSU (600w) would be good enough after adding the 480, if that helps provide context: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3256997/600w-psu-rx480.html

I would also add that I swapped disk drives with a relative today who's drive jammed and had to be opened with a paper clip frequently, I did this as I hardly use mine often at all. I may be mistaken, but I don't believe disk drives use too many watts, no?

My suspicion:
I think that the computer was slipping into, or out of, sleep mode (which I've now disabled), and somehow got stuck in-between during that period the fans blast when turning on my computer.

I just want to be darn sure that everythings okay with both my system and my new card, as I'm someone who's often tight on money.

Many thanks for any and all responses!

Let's try this one at a time:
1/ the fans blowing, of itself is not an issue
2/ giving a drive to your relative is not relevant in itself
3/ Your problems are likely not PSU related as, if they were, your PC would have powered down.

Now it is important to know whether, after the above, you were able to see anything on your screen after moving the mouse or a PC re-start and whether the information on the screen was the last program you were using or a new desktop.

Ah, sorry man. I included the info about the PSU only because I saw the question asked on related posts, and I only mentioned the disk drive because of power draw.

I also should've been more specific:
When I came back to my computer my screen was black and the fans were blowing on max. I could not move the mouse or interact with the computer with my keyboard, the screen light continued to lightly strobe as it does in power-saving mode. I clicked the restart button on my case, but the fans continued blow at max (this is unusual, so I note it), and the screen stayed black. After about 20-30 seconds I held the power button and powered my computer down. I waited a few minutes until I tried to power the PC back up again. After powering the PC up there were no issues, everything functioned as it normally does.

Although I'm now able to use the computer just fine, I was concerned about whether this was an incident depicting something that should be addressed.
Thanks again.

Update:
I decided retry the previous conditions by leaving chrome open and walking away from the computer for a while. This time after about 2 hours the same thing occurred. I have sleep mode turned off now, so that can't possibly be it.
The screen wouldn't wake up and numlock wouldn't change status. I pressed the restart button on my case which apparently worked, due to it allowing me to change the state of numlock, but the screen stayed black. After keeping the computer shutdown for a few minutes and then turning it back on, it's once again working fine.

So it seems to me, due to the image staying black despite the initial restart, that the GPU is at fault. I could believe it's my PSU not able to provide enough juice, but it just seems really odd that the crash would occur during an idle period and not when I'm putting the PC under load. Could my GPU be faulty, or should I attempt to get a new PSU instead? The GPU being at fault is only my assumption though.
