Question Black screen instead of screensaver on laptop

Hi all,

as title says, i get a back screen instead of screensaver. Screensaver is set of course, and screen timeout for both plugged in/unplugged is set to 5 hrs.

Can someone suggest a fix?

Temporarily set the timeout to one minute. Sometimes that can kickstart things into working properly again. If it works then set it back to five hours.

If that doesn't work then restart your computer properly by choosing RESTART from the power menu.

Thanks, I will try. I also noticed that spotlight doesn't work. Maybe it has something to do with the situation?

Try @Secret-Squirrel 's suggestion first.

Pay close attention to what does or does not happen.

If the problem continues then post more details about the laptop's hardware and current OS information.

Then try disabling Spotlight.

However, as always, be sure that all important laptop data is backed up at least 2 x to locations away from the laptop.

Verify that the data is recoverable and readable.

So, the laptop is dell g16 (7620), 16gb ram, ssd.

I tried the 1 minute screen timeout, to no avail.
Screensaver is set to ribbons. I noticed it sometimes works, random.
Spotlight does not work.
Also, i dont know if this is relevant, the option "show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen" in lock screen settings is set to "on".


Something i thought, i have a razer mouse which goes with the razer central software. In that, there is "axon" software which changes the background. Just mentioning this, maybe it affects the system. However i have disabled it and still same, no screensaver!
