Black screen + mouse cursor after logging in (Windows 8.1)

Ever since tuesday I've been stuck with a bit of a problem. After downloading and installing some updates, I rebooted it and logged in. I was confused when it showed a black screen, without the taskbar, but showing my mouse cursor.

After rebooting it multiple times, I realized that this wasn't just a small problem. I searched the internet for fixes, but nothing worked. Closed tasks via task manager, booted it in safe mode, scanned it with the command prompt, downgraded my GPU's drivers, and finally uninstalled my GPU. None of it has worked so far. However, other people on forums and Youtube seem to have more success than me.

If you guys have any solutions, ideas or other desperate attempts for me, I'd like to hear it. However, I don't need any comments about doing a full reset, because I don't want to lose any files.

this is not a gpu issue. I had that same problem with windows 7... what you need to do is restore to a point before last windows updates. also if you installed monitor driver - uninstall it

Its most likely to be a system failure to initialize basic files. That may occur if you modded any system files or if you have forcely stopped windows updates. There is an option on windows 8 and 8.1 that let you "refresh" your computer. It actually rechecks system files and doesnt harm your documents and other personal files. To access it you need your windows DVD and go on windows 8.1 side panel and hit settings. Then go "Change PC settings" -> Update and Recovery and hit "Get started" on "refresh your pc without affecting your files". Hit "Next" and then "Refresh". After its done it should fix your problem. If not please tell me!

Unfortunately I don't have a Windows DVD, it was already installed on my laptop when I bought it. Also, I can't access the side panel, I can only bring up the CTRL + ALT + DEL menu, or open up things via task manager or command prompt.

no no you dont need windows cd
restart computer and press F8 while booting to enter safe mode. This will load only basic drivers and you should have no problem accessing the restore menu
once inside enter Control Panel and search for system restore

Yes, sorry i forgot that. vesp3r is right when you power on your machine just hit F8 and it should take you to an Advanced Startup Options. Then select trobleshoot and after it select Refresh...

I HV the same problem but when I start it up and press f8 noting happens

I do have the same problem but I cannot access the "Change PC Settings".. I clicked it but nothing happened ..
