PC = HP P6-2416a
Motherboard : MS 7778 Ver: 1.0 - Jasmine
Onboard Graphics: Nvidia Geforce GT630
Integrated...not sure which type but AMD
Processor: AMD A10-5700

SYMPTOMS:

1) Windows 10 1709 started bugging me to update on all computers including this one. I ignored it for a while as it seems to come with numerous glitches every time a new update happens. Eventually it loaded by itself when I wasn't looking. Turned off computer one night over a week ago, Got up next day, powered on = No post beep, No signal to monitor. Groan.

2) Changed to different monitor, no change. Tested both monitors on working system = no problems there. Both working.

3) Reset CMOS, Changed CMOS battery as it was not at full charge (tested with multimeter). Still nothing. Changed from onboard graphics card to integrated graphics and managed to get signal to monitor and thought all was well.

4) Windows 10 1709 kept pestering me to update so I let it....big mistake. Previous version 1607 was working without a problem.

5) 1709 downloaded and every single time it went to update, it got stuck at 45% and then had to roll back to 1607 when it failed. This happened several times.

6) Followed advice of others who recommended using windows update troubleshooter, then sfc /scannow, then DISM. From memory they didn't find anything in the first round of testing but the 1709 update just kept failing. At one stage however it did manage to update 1607 and noted that my system was up to date. = no 1709 trying to download.

7) Tried troubleshooter sfc /scannow and various other options again to check all was working fine. I kept getting a message that SFC found corrupt files it couldn't fix. Ran W/Update troubleshooter and it found 'Potential Windows update database error detected = not fixed.

8)Ran Chkdsk and figured I had nothing to lose, it would at least fix anything else that might be going wrong if it didn't fix this issue. Took forever. Can't recall but don't think it found any problems. Ran Malwarebytes adwcleaner and various other scans but they found nothing. Side note: Microsoft put out a bulletin saying that 1709 wouldn't load unless av manufacturers had a certain registry key to stop these latest attacks etc so I unloaded avast& every other security software I had and activated defender. Didn't make any difference. Further side note: my other two pcs downloaded 1709 without having to do any of that. Both are running AVast and there was no problem with either of those.

9) Downloaded Win 10 USB & figured I'd do an inplace update instead of trying to download it from the net. Didn't use it yet, just saved it to usb. Ran troubleshooter again and it did seem to manage to fix various things including the Windows update database error. Disconnected the internet so it couldn't download anything in between and ran the usb without update option. Just wanted to see if it would repair it...nada, nothing, zip = got to 45% and failed as usual.

10) Went out while it was restoring previous version and told flatmate to follow any prompts it gave along the way but otherwise, just let it reload etc. Alas, this time it didn't restore the previous windows version. When I got back he had written down an error code that it spat back = 0xC1900101 - 0x30018 Failed in FIRST_BOOT with error during SYSPREP operation. It seemed to have gone to sleep after that and wouldn't open back up.

11) Powered off. Turned it on again and got an error message "No boot disc has been detected or the disk has failed" = SHOOT ME NOW. I figured it was probably sotware related, not hard drive related as I'd had plenty of upgrade and boot errors prior to that. Powered off and back on again = nothing, not a post beep, no signal to monitor = back to square one when it first attempted to download 1709. I don't have any other graphics cards to test it on and for all intents, if it is this latest update, it's knocked out both graphics cards so far and corrupted everything imaginable. . Have I mentioned at this stage how much I HATE Windows 10??????????. Download Tuesday = Crash Wednesday. Funny thing is = my other two pc's downloaded it fine and are working without issue.

12) Since then, I've gone through some of the hardware diagnostic tests suggested on other threads including remove RAM and test each one in every slot = have two 8 gb ram cards. Still got nothing every time. Left both out and switched PC on, get beeping from motherboard. Good sign maybe? I need one. Have no way to test power supply. & the only way to test hard drive would be to put it in the older HP if specs match, & try to fix the boot problem, but surely that wouldn't explain why I'm getting no signal to monitor?

13) Tried resetting CMOS again= still nothing. The power comes on, fans work, but still no signal to monitor & it won't respond to F10 or let me into the bios so I can try to boot from the USB or recovery discs. Then again I wouldn't know as I have no signal to monitor. Right now, it's a brick & I'm thinking of using one on it. A brick that is. It's weird that my older pc's downloaded 1709 with no issues and this newer one just carked it.

Any ideas what I can do next other than run screaming from the room? I've tried swearing at it in a very loud voice but it just sits there silently sneering at me & refusing to budge.

Windows 10 cannot kill hardware. So the reaction at step 1 makes me think its a hardware problem causing that, not windows

1607 isn't the previous version, 1703 is. You were being pestered as you were on an old version of windows 10 and Microsoft only officially support the last 2 versions. Updating from 1607 to 1709 is a pain, the only way I know that always works is a clean install of win 10 but I wouldn't do that while hardware is acting up.

PC beeping when no ram in is a sign its alive, PC can't run with no ram so that explains why it didn't get any further.

try unplugging drives as well, see if we can get some signal on screen?

The Graphics card is out now and it's connected to the integrated one. The ram is back in and was before that. Just took it out to test if I got any beeps. Figured it couldn't be the mobo if I'm getting beeps. Funny thing is that I got it working on the built in graphics card and it was working well and happy on 1607. No hardware issues at all until I tried to update to 1709 & now it's exactly the same as when it was on the nvidia card. Same symptoms. The only known factor for it getting to this point each time has been 1709 I'm also reading a lot on the net about 1709 causing black screen and all manner of other issues. I'm guessing that after 1607 it hadn't downloaded 1703 or that it too failed but I didn't notice. I'm wondering if the corruption issues are the problem? When it first went down & I switched to integrated graphics, I noticed that the nvidia was in 'hidden drivers' on device manager and that it said it wasn't connected. I tried deleting old drivers and nvidia software and reseated it, & downloaded the new drivers but they wouldn't load as the installer couldn't find the card and neither would my pc. Now the same thing has happened to the integrated graphics card so that seems to something that has been repeated.

I reads on another thread one person advising another poster to download the latest bios and putting it onto a usb and then renaming it with .rom at the end. do you reckon that might work to get into bios? I guess if the other graphics card is now not being found I won't be able to see it anylway. I tell ya...I've never felt more like smashing a computer as I do right now...lol

I did unplug the hard drive and started it but no beeps. Should I take it out altogether and try again or just unplug it and reboot?

Update: just unplugged it and turned power on = no beeping but fans and everything are working.

re:read your post, just unplugged again, booted up, nothing on screen either.

unlikely but have you tried different cables on monitor?

I have moved thread to systems forum as it might get more attention here.

resetting cmos should have got you into BIOS so I wouldn't go flashing bios as that can make it worse. Don't do anything rash as until the monitor works, we don't know what actual problem is (apart from no picture)

Thanks for that. I searched that error message on google i.e. "0xC1900101=0x30018 Failed in FIRST_BOOT with error during SYSREP operation". & got numerous hits about that & no signal to monitor after updating to win 10 1709. Since it's happened twice now with different graphics cards and both after trying to update to 1709, I'm wondering if the upgrade is corrupting something like graphics driver and mbr? Got me stumped. I'm no expert but I'm determined and won't let it beat me. Thankfully I have two other working pc's. older than this one and they're both working fine and both have 1709 on them with no hiccups. Go figure,

BTW, as per different monitor cables...I did better than that, I switched monitors and leads and the one that was formerly on this pc is now on my other one and working fine. It has the same cable on it that I was using on the P6-2416a both are working fine on the P6555a so can't be that. When the nvidia card stopped working I noticed that it had been moved to hidden devices in device manager. If I could get back into my system I'd be betting the Radeon is there now too. I couldn't possibly have lost two graphics cards and a hdd in one week? Groan....this is doing my poor old head in

0xC1900101 - 0x30018 the installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP operation

This type of issue normally happens when there's a hardware failure or software change made on the computer prior to this concern
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install-winpc/0xc1900101-0x30018-the-installation-failed-in-the/c3b922d1-1c98-40d9-88a7-f2fb845b44ff

all of those fixes rely on PC actually booting up.

Code 0xC1900101 - 0x3000D
Cause Installation failed during the FIRST_BOOT phase while attempting the MIGRATE_DATA operation. This can occur due to a problem with a display driver.

And this is what Microsoft suggest to fix the error: Disconnect all peripheral devices that are connected to the system, except for the mouse, keyboard and display. Update or uninstall the display driver.

https://superuser.com/questions/1175497/windows-10-update-0xc1900101-0x3000d-first-boot-and-migrate-data

handy but not if monitor won't load now... it doesn't make sense that you can't even get into bios, the windows drivers don't load until windows starts so why no picture now? Hard to believe it doesn't work with either integrated or nvidia

If windows 10 is still working, its just not showing anything on screen, all these restarts will have probably messed it up anyway. Point 11 leads me to suspect its broken now... so when we get a picture again, you likely need to fresh install win 10 and that should fix the boot error and the driver errors

Yep, I found that with every 'fix'...it relies on being able to actually get a display to work and I can't. I was literally laughing so hard I was in tears watching one guy on youtube talking about no signal to monitor and then proceeding to give solutions that required a signal to monitor..lol. Some of the comments were pricelss = if the screen is black , how the hell can you do anything other than swear at it?...lol As for display drivers, this is what I'm suspecting is the issue i.e. display drivers being corrupted and therefore no signal to monitor twice now. This is why I suspected the upgrade as I can't believe two have failed in a week. I have another pc as I"ve said, and wondered if I could use it somehow to get the other one working or at least test the nvidia graphics card. Only problem is it's a 250w psu while the new hp is 300w and the nvidia requires 300w minimum power. Wondering if that would matter if it's only to see if my other pc can find it?. The last thing I want to do is brick the other one. I coudln't cope...the expletives I"d be hurling at it would be prize winning. I'm not shy with technology so happy to give anything a go. My asus laptop had a broken power jack and was unusable, so I got a new jack, took it apart, resoldered a new one on, replaced the thermal compound and put it back together and it's working like a charm. It took a bit of patience but if you've got nothing to lose why not? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I also learned a hell of a lot about laptops and how they tick. Hope someone comes along with a possible solution...it's a bit of a doozy.

PS, "it doesn't make sense that you can't even get into bios, the windows drivers don't load until windows starts so why no picture now?

Exactly but that's what happened initially. It knocked out the nvidia and now it's taken out the ati radeon. Running otu of graphics cards. I'm wondering if I can use my other gpu in the other pc to see if it might start that way? Problem is, how do you mount a new graphics card when there's no display to begin with. to load drivers? AND, would it be compatible? The slots are the same pcie, What do you reckon about that?

LOL...guess who wrote that ????...Me. I had it working on the integrated graphics and thought I'd solved it with a few fixes indeed I had till I tried to update to the dreaded 1709 again and the same thing happened. ..it was after that last update that it went awry again and I haven't made it back to hp forum yet to post anything about it. Will probably do that next. Driving me crazy. You get to the point were you read so much and watch so many youtube vids your head wants to explode.

i wouldn't try to rescue the install, I would be more concerned about getting picture working. I saw a few people around having problems getting GT 630 to work with win 10 so might be time for a new card

resetting cmos should have sent you into bios to set defaults, what those are when no card is installed is anyones guess. with no hdd in it, it shouldn't try to boot anything. try resetting cmos with no hdd attached, something wrong with bios not showing a display after cmos reset.

is monitor attached by DVI or VGA?

reading this from your HP thread

I predict less than a 0.0001% probability of fulfilling your hope -- it is the motherboard that detects the presence of a "plug-and-play" add-in graphics adapter, and then disables the "onboard" graphics.
Adding such a "switch" would be a "philosophical" change on the current policy: "add-in-always-supercedes-integrated".
Also, if this "switch" capability was added, then what would be the "default" value: internal versus add-in ?
If it were set to internal, then all the customers currently using an add-in adapter would be puzzled by a "black-screen", because their video-cable is connected to the "add-in", which won't get any signal after the BIOS-update is applied.

If it were set to "add-in-if-present", that would be exactly like the current "add-in-supercedes-integrated".
tells me the integrated should have show a picture after cmos was reset with no gt630 in machine... so why didn't it? Have you tried another monitor?

Yep have swapped the monitor that's working on the other pc with it's cord as it was working on that too and still nothing from the p6-2416a, though the one I swapped out is working with the other pc. I'll try to reset cmos now without hard drive connected and see where that gets me. stand by. BTW, I posted an update over on hp forum to see what the guys over there had to say about it.

As for the gt630, I appreciate that it might be incompatible but it was working fine on version 1607 of windows. It was only after I updated it to 1709 (or tried) that I lost that card. It doesn't explain why the integrated card how now gone too though. Its a radeon but I can't recall what kind. Will take a look at the specs once I finish doing this smos reset without hdd connected.

Monitor is attached via vga = I don't have the right adapter for the dvi or a lead that will fit it.

OK, so I tried that and nothing. I did hear this time two short faint zip zip type sounds though as if it were trying to access something. I heard it both when I had the hdd attached and when I didn't.

Thanks for that. On other threads on hp forum some people were replying to other posters re: their system is too old for the 1709 update. Mine is only a few years old and the one that is working ok is 7.5 years old and running 1709. I may ring a local techie and see if he can do anything but it seems to me that if 1709 is causing driver problems with graphics cards including integrated ones then it could indeed be that the os is to blame for it. I'm seeing thread after thread on the net all having problems with graphics and black screen to name only a few problems with this update & some have relatively new computers, CAn't help myself, I seriously cant stand Win 10. Had no problems like these with any other os and I"ve had computers for decades now. It's literaly bricked my whole computer. Seems to me that when it tried to revert back to 1607 when the update failed, the drivers were taken out then. I'm just wondering whether I can put another hdd into it with an uncorrupted copy of win 10 and see if it will work that way. MD Klarren n the hp forum suggested as much so I might have to pick his brain a bit further a to how to do that, He suggested picking up a cheap 320gb one from a local techie with win 10 already on it I do have my other pc and it's successfully running 1709. Wondered if I swapped the hdd's over, whether mine might boot from that? Problem is it still won't have workable graphics drivers and that seems to be the crux of the issue re; no signal to monitor. Brain getting fired right about now. Might give up for the day and live to fight again tomorrow. I'll read the other two links you posted. Thanks for sticking with me through this. It's a conundrum.

I've just gone through hp's entire checklist for black screen = no dice. STill nothing. What they don't advise on is if the os is corrupted and the video drivers are MIA as they seem to be in my case. I couldn't have fried both graphics cards in one week. I'm still suspecting that Win 10 update has corrupted the drivers or just doesn't identify them as being present. I might call hp tomorrow and ask them what to do and also microsoft re: is it possible that this version of windows is failing to find the graphics drivers or indeed doing something to make them redundant. EVen more important is there anything I can do to fix it. Thanks for your hep so far. If you find out anything let me know Cheers

Hmm... no boot disk found... change the SATA port you plug into? If the current SATA port is causing a short (or anything), that may be the issue.

As an aside: an electrical short/leak could be preventing enough power from reaching the processor and motherboard.

Oh, and some updates of Windows do change settings in the BIOS. If you corrupted that by accident, it might be bricked.

Hi electro...have been giving this some thought based more on logic than experience. Various threads on microsoft forums & others suggest that if 1709 doesn't find something compatible it removes it. The first attempt to update left my nvidia card unworkable so I plugged into the integrated graphics card which the 1709 update possibly hadn't noticed as it wasn't being used. I took a look at device manager and found the nvidia card in hidden devices saying it wasn't plugged in when it was. When I attempted to update again after several failed attempts, my integrated graphics card also stopped working and I got an error message pertaining to graphics drivers. When I restarted it there was no signal to monitor, just as it was when it took out my nvidia. Seems to me that currently I have no graphics drivers working on the system and for all I know my pc could in fact be booting up and bios might be opening when I press f10...I just can't see what's happening as the monitor isn't getting a signal. Could it be the monitor driver as well? hence the reason I can't see the bios on my screen either? i.e. if the monitor isn't showing up either and plug and play isnt' working for some reason, then I wouldn't be able to see the bios screen anyway. The reason I'm suspecting the 1709 update is because others have experienced the exact same problem just after updating. However in my case I was getting an error for possible corruption in the update database and then no boot disc detected. After I started it back up again there was once again,no signal to the screen. I'm wondering if the problem is with my monitor not being recognised and/or missing drivers as well, & maybe I should start there as Colif suggested If my system were bricked would there be any way to tell ? Currently my MOBO does beep when I remove the ram and start it up so it gives me the impression that it's still functional.

btw, how do I change the sata port? A for corrupting update...nup, the update stopped itself at 45% and began to revert back to the previous version. I left it alone to do that and when I came back it had the error message about driver issues noted in my initial post. It was only after I shut it down and rebooted that I got a messages saying either no boot disk or disk had failed. After that I shut it down again and when I restarted there was no signal to monitor. Funny thing is, that's where it started until I changed graphics to integrated.

Yep fans spin, lights go on but no signal to monitor. When you say stuff is unplugged what do you mean? I've unplugged the hdd and it still seems to start i.e. fans spin, lights go on. I've removed the ram and it still starts but beeps to indicate ram is missing. etc. I don't expect to see a bios screen as there's no signal to monitor so I can't see anything including Bios. It might well be there, but since I can't see it, I don't know that it isn't opening.

Ok. Now according to what I've read if you install any stick of RAM it won't turn on at all (i.e. no fans, lights on mobo, sounds etc?)

Yep that's right With ram in it won't switch on =no signal to monitor.. I have two 8gb sticks, tried both in each slot turning on and then off for each stick in each slot, draining power each time and touching power supply to get rid of emt so I don't do any more damage = 8 times in all. I have four slots.

correction, it still turns on and fans spin, lights etc, with or without ram. Just no signal to monitor
