I honestly don't know whether this is isolated to the mobo being faulty, or maybe my GPU is bricked, or both?! I'll quickly recap the steps I've taken -
Purchased MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition and a i5 4460 3.4ghz to go with it.
Setup running fine with Sapphire 7970, 250gb SSD (5tb of standard HDD space as well), 8GB DDR3 RAM, Coolermaster GX 650w PSU. Quite pleased with the upgrade and no issues.
Bought a RX 480 reference card when they launched (was intending on liquid cooling), worked fine, happy with that.
Bought a second RX 480 reference card, intending to crossfire, see what it could do (I know, not the smartest choice but I was excited to try it). One card was running at x1 and one at x8 bus width. I could not get them to run any higher, so of course I wasn't even able to crossfire them, tried to get support from AMD and MSI about it, nothing they suggested helped so I ended up returning one of the cards and ordering a GTX 1070 instead.
While the GTX 1070 was getting delivered, I noticed that the RX 480 I still had was still running at x8 in that PCIe slot (should be running x16, was capable of) so I tried the other PCIe slot, and I got no signal at all from that slot! Monitor didn't turn itself off standby when powering on, could hear it still booting into windows (and was even able to RDP into it, but it seemed to be using the onboard GPU for rendering). Tried plugging in the monitor to different ports on the back of the GPU, HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI didn't work. Tried my HDTV, didn't work either.
When the 1070 arrived, I put that into the mobo, it didn't work in the bottom PCIe slot (same problem as the RX 480, no signal) but seemed to be running okay at x8 on the top slot. Not ideal but working for now, was able to game quite well, got decent Firestrike scores etc.
Except when I had to reboot the PC after installing an audio driver (was a relatively fresh install of windows, hadn't gotten round to it so 5.1 wasn't working natively). No signal. No signal from either PCIe slot. Tried going into the BIOS settings and disabling the onboard graphics card, didn't actually make a difference swapping it away from PEG..
No signal with RX 480, GTX 1070 or even my 7970, on either PCIe slot.. Board's fried, surely? Maybe that power draw issue the RX 480s had? So sent back the mobo and Amazon sent me a replacement.. Should work, right? Nope. Same problem. No signal from either GPU. Onboard works fine but no signal.. Must be a driver issue surely? Formatted the SSD and fresh installation of Windows 10 to be sure... No dice. Flashed the BIOS to latest version.. Nothing. So this is a fresh installation of windows (no graphics drivers installed), a freshly flashed BIOS, tried wiping the CMOS.. Nothing is working. Could be the power supply? I bought a new PSU (corsair 750w semi-modular) to see if that was the issue.. Didn't do a thing.. Maybe the replacement mobo I'd been sent was DOA?
Got pretty desperate.. took the PC apart and out of the case. Rebuilt it sitting on my desk. No change. Swapped the RAM to my old RAM (still had it, 8gb ddr3 but in 4x2gb), nope. Set up all my new components with the old mobo (ASUS M4A78LT mATX mobo) to see if it was the replacement mobo I'd been sent.. The 7970 worked.. but the 1070 didn't?!
So what? The new mobo is fried and the GTX 1070? My PC is currently running on my desk in pieces using the onboard graphics. Seems to be absolutely fine, no CPU, RAM or HDD oddities to be found.. I just can't use a damn external GPU?!
I am honestly stumped. If anyone can help, I would be greatly, greatly appreciative. I've tried to narrow it down as best I can to eliminate what the problem can't be. And so far the two things that don't seem to be working are the mobo and GPU. Ebuyer's returns policy basically says if you send it back and they don't find a fault in it.. They will just send you it back and charge you for the shipping.. So I'm reluctant to send the 1070 back to them just incase it's not broken.. But it didn't work with my old mobo, so.. must be, right?
Sorry for the long read, I've tried to explain every step I've taken in the hope that it would stop people suggesting things I've already tried. Would appreciate any and all help offered!
