Question Black screen on Dell Precision 7520 (but screen isn't broken!)

Jul 2, 2018
Hi folks,

I have a Dell Precision 7520 laptop running Windows 10 (Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042). As of today, it boots up with a black screen. No Dell logo, nothing.

However, I know the computer is booting up normally, because I can ping it, and because it connects to an external monitor just fine. I have not added or removed any hardware recently.

I tried the Dell screen test by powering it on while holding down the "D" key down, and to my surprise, the built in monitor works just fine - it displays the test color sequence correctly.

I ran dxdiag, and it reported no problems, although the "Display 2" tab, which I believe corresponds to the built in monitor, reports
Current Display Mode: n/a
Monitor: n/a
HDR: n/a

And in device manager, I only see "Generic PnP Monitor" under "Monitors". I'm pretty sure there should be another entry for the built in monitor.

Given that my monitor does apparently work (thank you color test), is this a driver issue? Any ideas for how to fix it?

Thank you very much for any help you can provide!!
