Black screen on start up

I was trying to find a resolution for m monitor(second hand) and after choosing a resolution the screen went black, like it wasn't supported. It stayed on said black screen for 10 minutes at which point I reset.
Now it will start, show the Windows logo but then go to a black screen before the login screen.

So did you try another monitor and see if it can boot without the blackness? If that does not work, then test your gpu by using the on board graphics.
