Black screen problems when playing games

Hello everyone

I have this problem where i play a game for a short time this happens:
it happens with TF2 mostly,java games as soon as i launch them.
The screen goes black and then some white vertical lines appear for a second and if i dont Ctrl+Alt+Delete the monitor says no signal(like the computer is off) but the sound is still normal.
When i close the game that caused the black screen the color quality gets set from 32-bit to 16-bit
I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 with DirectX 9.0c.
The drivers for my graphics card are up to date.
Specs:
Cpu:AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5400+
Gpu:ATI Radeon HD 3850
RAM:2 GB

Can anyone help me solve this,or i need to get a new graphics card?

try to reinstall your driver first. it is best if you could do clean install

Hey man.
Sorry for not answering or so long.
Anyway,i reinstalled the driver and it still happens.Any other suggestions?

if playing around with drivers does not solved it then maybe it's time to get a new one

I don't know... Maybe its a cooling problem.I will get a new fan or something...
