Black Screen under heavy load: GPU possibly overheating?

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with my screen going black while playing games for short periods of time. It seems like this happens once my GPU temps reach a certain degree (over 77c). I'm just wondering if anyone has personally dealt with this issue, and can help verify this suspicion as it seems to have followed me from a previous build. GPU temp is the only thing I can think it may be. I used to run 2 xfx rx 580's in crossfire on an old FX-8350 build, and kept this problem under control by keeping temps under 82c. If I left the GPU fans set to auto, temps would rise well into the high 80's to even 90+ and ultimately black screen. I wasn't sure if what seemed to be a temp issue was just because my old pc was in fact old and dusty, so I cleaned it up but nothing seemed to change.

Since these cards were fairly new (about 2-4 months old) I figured i'd try them in my new build to see if anything changed before buying a new GPU for it. Unfortunately my current setup is experiencing the same issue, but at even lower GPU temps. If they hit a degree higher than 77c the screen will go black displaying a loss of signal, and leaving everything unresponsive as far as I can tell with audio still playing (sometimes looping sound). All of the fans kick into high gear at that point, and I have to power it down. I'm just wondering if maybe i'm missing something here before I scrap these guys. My cpu temps seem to be fine (52c when oc at 4ghz under load. quite a bit less at stock), and I don't think my psu is a problem either. Everything in my new pc is about a week old, so it's brand new.

What clock speed and voltage are you running the cards at? I have an XFX RX 580 GTR-S 8GB that I am currently running at 1515 MHz core / 2250 MHz memory.

I can verify your suspicions about the temperature. Below 78°C my card runs flat-clocks in the Firestrike Stress Test. It starts dropping clocks and getting unstable somewhere between 78°C-82°C. It seemed to me, while overclocking, that the offending temperature got lower as my clock speed increased, as well. Below 1500 MHz I was stable up to about 82°C, at 1515 MHz it starts dropping clocks and artifacting at 78°C, but is rock solid below that.

I'm actually kind of glad to hear of another card behaving the same way!
