Whenever I install NVIDIA drivers then early in the install I get a black screen. I have gone through the installation in safe mode, which seemed to work but when I restarted it black screened just before the lock screen. For reference the card is an EVGA founders SC GTX 980. Other hardware is an i7 4770, an Asus h81m-e motherboard, 16 GB of Corsair something or other 1600 DDR3, and a corsair rm750x PSU. I have tested with my GTX 780, which worked. Thanks for any help, am pulling my hair out here.

Yes the power supply is a good model, but you want to make sure the power supply in the test system is also good. Testing a 980 in some cheap system with a $30 power supply won't be a good test.

Find a second system with a good power supply to try the card in. If card crashes when drivers are installed in most cases it's a bad card. Did you check for a BIOS update for the motherboard?

Power supply is good - its an RM750x and it powers my more power hungry 780 fine. Will try updating motherboard bios as it's never been done.
