I was playing a game one day and my screen just went black. I tried to restart and it came up to a black screen and was stuck there. I tried to restart again but when I tried the restart button nothing happened. I had to use the button to shut it down. I started it in safe mode to get it to work. Then I disabled the display adapter and it powers on just fine. Is something wrong with my card?

I have a MSI Radeon HD 7850

Solution
The first thing that I would try is to reseat the RAM. Remove each memory stick one at a time, clean the contacts, blow out the slot, firmly reinstall (make sure that the lever on the slot is all the way up), and then repeat for the remaining memory. Also at the same time make sure that matched sets of RAM are in the same color coded memory slots.

The same procedure can be performed on the graphics card. Afterwards be sure to reconnect any additional PCIE power supply cables to the graphics card (and monitor cables).

Here are two general troubleshooting checklists.

Solution

There may be a problem with the graphics card, but there are also some common causes that are easily fixed.
