Blank Screen at Startup - My older XP laptop doesn\'t even show the boot process

My older XP laptop doesn't even show the boot process on startup, but it does make the beep and the web cam initializes after which screen is still blank. This just happened after watching a movie on netflix. During the movie the screen froze and purple lines appeared throughout the image, but I could tell that the movie kept on playing as the sound was still progressing. Any thoughts?

Can you get into Safemode ? (keep tapping F8 key after rebooting)
