Find the manual for your router by google searching for the model name i.e. netgear WNDR3700

Find the support page for Netgear, and find their quick start guide and/or the user manual.

Follow the instructions in the manual step by step.

You may want to set the router to factory defaults before you start, the instructions for this should be in the manual also.

Change the admin user name (if possible) and set a new password (a good password, as shown below) that is different from the default given in the manual.

When you set up Wireless, you should use WPA2 level security with AES only (do NOT use WEP), and a secure password. Secure means something like "P@ssW0rd!!" not "Password" Use a random word, change some characters to upper...
1. Change the default router login username and password
2. Set a strong WPA2 password on the WiFi connection
3. Use that same password on all your devices.

By 'strong password', I mean something NOT like "mypassword". Or the name of your dog.

Step by step? Read your router user manual. It is in there.

When you set up Wireless, you should use WPA2 level security with AES only (do NOT use WEP), and a secure password. Secure means something like "P@ssW0rd!!" not "Password" Use a random word, change some characters to upper case, some to numbers, and use special characters like @ ! # $. The password will need to be at least 10 characters long.

This should set up your router so that only someone with the password will have access.

Make sure you write down the router admin username and password, and the Wireless password. If the router is in a secure place, the best thing to do is tape the username and password list to the router, that way you will not lose it! :)
