When I turn on my computer I get this blue checkered overlay over my boot up screen. As an FYI a couple of days ago windows while booting up asked me if I wanted to repair a drive- I did. Also logging on takes especially long. I feel as though these could be related problems.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Solution
Try this:
1) As the PC is booting up and you see the DELL logo, apply a little bit of pressure (it won't take much) along the back edge of the palm rest in between the two hinges for the LCD. If the lines flicker in and out you either a) have a loose LCD cable b) the cable is broken or c) something is wrong with the connector for the LCD on the motherboard.

If that doesn't yield any luck then try this:
2) a)As the PC is booting up and you see the DELL logo, press F12 on the keyboard to launch the one time boot menu.
b) Once this has loaded look for an entry called Diagnostics, or PSA (pre-boot system assessment).
c) Use your keyboard to highlight it, press Enter.
d) Allow this to run following the steps it gives.

Did it return any errors?
If it did: Post them here and try to make it as verbatim (word for word) as possible so we can help you further diagnose the issue.
If it didn't: Let us know and we will look into something else.

It went by the Dell logo screen without any problems, but then this happened http://imgur.com/vAU46oX

You either are having issues with your hard drive itself or the motherboard considering its giving you gibberish. I'm leaning more towards the hard drive. Are you able to turn it completely off, remove the battery, let it sit for about 30 secs and then try to boot again? If so, as soon as you see the DELL Logo hit F12 and look for the diagnostics entry. If you can't get it that far I would recommend looking into replacing the hard drive. How old is the computer itself?

Alright, I'll try that in a couple of hours (it's 6am here). The computer is not mine so I don't know the exact date it was bought, but I would say it is ~ two years old. I have a feeling it would be the hard drive too because of the repair it asked me to do a couple of days ago and the long time it takes to long on.

It took me three tries to get to the f12 screen( every other time it would turn off). After going through diagnostics, it stopped at 93 percent and crossed out memory. I presume this means that I need to get my ram replaced right?

FYI: Out of curiosity I rebooted in to windows, 10 seconds after booting in I got blue screen.

You would presume correct sir.

Hope it pans out for you.
