Blue screen after CPU upgrade

I upgraded my CPU from the FX4100 to the FX8350 and everything runs fine until I go into one of my games like BF4 or Crysis 3, that's when the blue screen comes on but it does do it sometimes just surfing the web. My PC has the Asus M5A97 EVO Pro MB, EVGA GTX550ti, Corsair 650w PS, 16GB Corsair Vengeance, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, and 2 WD hard drives. My PC ran flawless before the swap but I want to get more FPS in my games so the CPU came first and then I will swap out my video card for a better one. Please help, don't know why a simple CPU swap could do this? I have already removed the cooler in case the thermal paste was not done properly, cleaned the CPU and installed the stock cooler that came with the new CPU with the thermal grease already on it, but I am still getting the blue screen. My CPU temp is at 14 degrees as I'm writing this according to my Core Temp program and my loads on the cores are very low if that helps any? and as a bonus my disc drive stopped working too for some reason? Help.

I would check bios version as mentioned above. Also did you reinstall the OS after the upgrade? Sometimes windows drivers will conflict when changing a CPU even when the motherboard has not been changed. You could try a windows repair install to correct this issue. Windows will look at your hardware and reinstall the appropriate drivers.

Hi Jim, didn't know if my answer about the power supply went through, not a frequent user till now. I am using the Corsair TX650 which is about 14 months old and has never gave me any problems me any problems before. Do you think it's not enough watts or just going bad on me?

I just ran a performance test using the windows program and had my Core Temp program on and noticed that Freq #4 (is that Core 4?) was much higher then the others and when it jumped to 100% my blue screen appeared again!! I will look for your replies after work tonight because I have to leave, thanks guy's and I hope it's not a bad CPU....P.S my motherboard manual says it will support up to a 8 core chip.

You might have incorrectly applied thermal compound or the incorrectly installed the cooler. Clean everything with rubbing alcohol, preferably 91%, and a cotton ball or some kind of lint free cloth. Reapply thermal paste per coolermaster's instructions and reseat the cooler.

When you say bios version do you mean to update the bios? I did not reinstall the OS because I have done CPU upgrades before (not on this PC) and never had this problem. I will have to install another disc drive (I have a spare) and will try the repair first, I hope I do not have to reinstall the OS. Do you think it might be the power supply? I think I have more then enough watts for my setup, and all my hardware is less then 14 months old. Is it possible the CPU is bad? Thank you for any help you can give me. It's the trouble shooting that's always the hard part.

A Corsair 650 Watt should be enough wattage.

Yes I was referring to a bios update. I looked at Asus site and found the Asus M5A97 EVO or a M5A97 Pro but not an EVO PRO as you listed in the op so I am not sure which you have. However looking at the EVO and the PRO they list support for your CPU but only with bios version 1604 or later. To check which bios you have from within windows I found #1 as the easiest method http://www.wikihow.com/Check-BIOS-Version.

If you do not have 1604 you will need to update your bios. If you still have your old CPU I would reinstall it to update your bios to avoid any crashes during the update. A crash during a bios update will most likely render your motherbord unusable without sending it into ASUS for a bios chip replacement.

If you do have bios version 1604 I would attempt a windows startup repair which should leave your data in place ( I would back up data just in case) or a full OS reinstall to insure the proper chipset drivers.

Hello, I checked my bios version and according my AI Suite II my bios version is 0902, and my motherboard is M5A97 EVO and not the Pro. I will reinstall my old CPU this weekend and do the bios update and see what happens and will let you know if that worked, thanks again. Joe

Hello, well I changed my processor back to the old one and everything runs great again with no blue screen in sight, but when I tried to update the bios through my AI Suite II program where it says update I was not getting any results, it just said connecting to server and that was it. I then went to the Asus website where it gave me a link that was put into my clipboard, I clicked on that and followed the instructions which took me to my Adobe Reader which said it can't open it because it's not the correct file. I then installed 7zip to unzip it but that didn't give me the update either? I have the M5A97-ASUS-1605.7z file of 2.24 MB in my downloads but cant seem to be able to get it to update the bios? I must be doing something wrong somewhere? At least everything is working now but I want the 8350 in there so I can upgrade the GPU soon, thanks, Please let me know if you have any ideas that I can try.

Most BIOS updates are an ISO file that you burn to a CD. Then you boot from that CD to install. What is the .XXX extension on that file like TXT is the extension on "TEST.TXT"? Is it ISO?

Lets make sure we are getting the right file before we work on the installation. The 1605 bios update you listed is for the M5A97 and not the M5A97 EVO you said that you had. It is very important that you insure the correct motherboard when searching for bios updates.

I did not see anything on the file like the extension you are referring to?

Windows 7 and up hides well known extensions. You have to go to your control panel -> select FOLDER OPTIONS -> select the VIEW tab and uncheck the HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES then you can see what kind of file it is.

there are 2 ASUS M5A97 EVO. R1.0 and R2.0. you can see the model number on the motherboard it self. with the ASUS M5A97 EVO R1.0 you need 1604 bios to upgrade with FX-8350. with the ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 you need 2201 bios.
you must extract the file with winrar or 7z program.

Hello, just want you to know that my PC is up and running great with my new FX8350 and soon my new video card (maybe you have a suggestion on what card would work good for under $250 that would work good with my 8350?) I ended up going to Asus website, downloaded the 1604 version and going into my AI SUITE II and installing it through the Asus update utility using update bios from file and it worked great, Thanks to everyone that helped me get this problem fixed with all your ideas, you guy's are the best. Hello Jim, thank you for all of your help on my issue and just want to let you know that I am running my FX8350 now with no problems at all. My temperature while I'm writing this is around 15C and in my games it goes to around 40C and that's using the cooler that came with the processor which is actually a Cooler Master Gemini II which kind of surprised me and it works very well, I might not even put the Hyper 212 EVO back in. Back to my issue, I downloaded the 1604 version from Asus and used the Asus update utility in my AI SUITE II and used the update the bios through a bios file method and it worked perfect, thank you so much for all of your help and if you have any suggestions on which video card under $250 would work well with my 8350 it would be appreciated, I'm thinking the GTX550ti I have might be bottlenecked? It seems to work ok though but I want more fps. Thanks again Joe.

Hello, just want you to know that my FX8350 is running perfect and cool, I ended up using the 1604 version and not the 1605 which was the wrong one like you stated. I downloaded the file from Asus and used my Asus update utility from my AI SUITE II program (came with the motherboard dvd) and used the update the bios through a bios file and it worked perfectly ( it gives you 4 choices to update) my temps are 15 to 40c depending what I'm doing. I am using the cooler that came with the cpu which is actually a Cooler Master Gemini II with 4 heat pipes and it seems to work well, I might not even put the Hyper 212 Evo back on, well maybe I will? Thanks again for your help and if you have any ideas on which video card would work well with my 8350 as long as it is under $250 would be appreciated. You guy's are the best for all your help, thank you Joe.
