Just today I installed my new mobo and cpu, gigabyte z97p-d3 and i5 4690k to be percise, and I am stuck in a bsod loop with the error failed to load asio.sys I think as this was earlier today. Ive read around and got the impression that just completely wiping my hdd and reinstalling windows is the best choice. This is not a problem for me because I dont really have anything to lose apart from games and other software I can install again. My question is, is this the correct solution? Keeping in mind that I get as far as the windows loading logo just after boot up. If it is the correct solution could you please link me to a good guide on how to do this from the bios or something as I cant access my desktop before i get the bsod error.

Thanks.

Can you put hdd back in PC it was originally in? Reason I ask is you might want to do this before swapping it - Reactivating win 10 after new hardware - as otherwise you might have problems activating it on new hardware

So I take it last PC had an Asus motherboard?

The genuine AsIO.sys file is a software component of Asus PC Probe by ASUS.

Since you swapped motherboard/CPU then the drivers in win 10 would be all wrong so a Fresh install is the best idea. On another PC, download the Windows 10 media...

Since you swapped motherboard/CPU then the drivers in win 10 would be all wrong so a Fresh install is the best idea. On another PC, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB << this is latest version and you need it to support the swap of your licence from old PC to new one

BIOS - you need to change the boot order so USB is first, hdd/ssd 2nd
Boot from the USB and follow this very helpful guide: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

When you reach screen asking for licence, click "I don't have a key" and win 10 will continue to install and once you have completed install, you will need to follow the 1st link I showed you at top about reactivating win 10 on new hardware

If your old PC originally had win 7 on it and you upgraded it to win 10, then when you fresh install win 10 it will want you to delete all the partitions on the drive until all there is on drive is unallocated space, and then click next. Win 10 & Win 7 use different partitioning schemes.

That should do it :)

Ran into this issue a few days ago, thank you for your answer, it was a big help in understanding the problem. However, I would like to expand on the solution. While reimaging is a good idea, you do have another option. In Windows 10 (dont do this in Windows 7!!!! In windows 7, use your designated key [depends on your motherboard] to get to safe mode), interrupt your start up process (during the starting windows loading/spinning icon) 3 times in a row by shutting down or pressing the physical restart button. It should then ask you to do start up repair or choose advanced options/troubleshooting. Youll want the option that lets you reboot into safemode (with networking, so you can get new drivers if needed). From there, go into add or remove programs and remove your old asus motherboard specific software. For me, no asus software was on this list, but programs were installed and located in C:\Program files and C:\Program files (x86)\ ... I deleted them and searched the registry and deleted all keys relating to Asus as I had no other asus products. I then installed my new MSI drivers/Ryzen drivers and my old OS i stallation was fine. I use this PC as a server so its worth it. Be careful when editing the registry, especially if you have other asus products. Might be easier to use a registry cleaner like ccleaner.

Anyways, hope this helps a random internet stranger. Pay it flrward and all that.
