I got a CUV4x Asus Mobo, Intel 700@933 CPU, 64mg GeForce 256

After a while my computer locks up with a blue screen "Hardware Failure has occured, Contact your vendor"

Then the event log records this error

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 2/03/2001
Time: 8:12:48 AM
User: N/A
Computer: BIGGS
Description:
The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I had no hardware problems when i had windows 98 SE (1 week ego) they have just stated poping up after i installed 2000. When it locks up the system, and i have to reboot it the computer dose not do a scandisk which puzzled me at first. These Blue screens are not very common maybe once or 2ce a day, usually when i am playing some game, sometimes just in windows.

Any sugestions?

PFMODNT.SYS is a file from Creative Labs. This driver is listed as a "PCI/ISA Device Info. Service".

I would suggest that you do a few things:

1) Check to make sure that you have the latest version of the drivers for your Creative Labs sound card. You should find the PFMODNT.SYS file in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32. Open Windows Explorer and find this file. Right-click on it and select "Properties", then the "Version" tab. You should make sure you get the latest driver from Creative Labs. FWIW, the file on my system is listed as version "2.0.0.0", and I'm not even sure if this is the latest version available.

2) If the drivers are updated, try putting the sound card in a different slot.

3) If this doesn't help, try a different card. There may be a hardware problem with the card itself, as the error message indicates.

Hope this helps!

Oke well thats BIG start, thanks to you i know what that file is relateing to.

I searched my system and i could not find PFMODNT.SYS anywhere. I was useing the Updated drivers but i think i updated them incorrectly when i formated and installed 2000. I am re-downloading full drivers for the sound card as i type this.

I got anouther question. I tried moveing different Cards around and when i Trned the computrback on it had to redetect them ( thats fine) but when i went to set up the NIC with the static IP i always use it sais anouther device is already useing it... and after moveing NIC to a lower slot it branded is as NIC #2 and u couldent use the same IP.

When i it back to the original PCI slot, it detected it normally and set back the settings i had before?
Is this for maveing multiple NIC's? it reserves IP's for each?

you have to go to device manager and remove the nic before you move it around, otherwise windows may think it is still there and keep the settings (eg ip #) and install the NIC as a second one, and it wont be able to use the same IP

This is a via chipset mobo. Very common to have sound card conflicts with drivers and such on via chipset mobo's. Many posts everywhere on this matter.

Win2k saves the settings for the nic that you had setup first. If you look in "My Network Places" and then look at properties, the second install should have put a title like "local area connection 2." If you want to set the IP address the same as before you have to delete the first instance of the nic. Otherwise just put it back in the same slot you had it in at first.
