I am trying to set up my brother with my old computer. For temporary use I am trying to boot up the computer from an external hard drive that contains a clone of his laptop hard drive which is running windows 7.

My problem is when i go to boot up the computer off the external it starts to load windows for 2 seconds but then goes to a blue screen with the error code "stop 0x0000007b" It says that it thinks there is viruses on the hard drive.

Am I getting this because I need to install the proper drivers on the external? If so how would I do that?

Or could it be a problem with cloning the windows?

Solution
The problem is likely because of the inability of the system to boot the OS from a USB external drive even if the external drive contains an otherwise viable clone that will boot as an internally-connected drive. So connect the cloned drive internally in the laptop (which is its destination), assuming the laptop is available to you and simply determine if it will boot. Obviously your first order of business is to determine if you have a viable clone; the only absolute way to determine that is to install the drive internally in the system.

Booting to a cloned USBEHD (or SSD) is something of a crapshoot. In some systems there's no problem at all; in other systems it will not be permitted.
