Blue screen on update to 1709

I have Windows 10 pro (10.0.16063 Build 15063) and when I try to update to "Feature update to Windows 10, 1709" it goes through the installation process and during the reboot steps, it shows a blue screen with the code "SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED". I've tried this several times now and each time it bluescreens.

On Windows update, it shows there was a problem installing the update and the error is "0x80242006".

I've unplugged all extra peripherals and uninstalled a ton of software that I didn't absolutely need.

I went through some troubleshooting with Microsoft and they tried doing the update via a download. Today, I got a new prompt for the update via the "update assistant" and I also tried that to no avail.

I can't seem to find any memory dump in my Windows folder so I'm not sure what I should be doing to troubleshoot.

PC specs:

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth z170 mark 1
CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K

see if any of the suggestions help.

or have you done that already? If you already tried that, I would download the Windows 10 media creation tool (its the 2nd link on page)and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB, and perhaps do a clean install to bypass the installer error

backup anything you want to keep on the boot drive as fresh install will wipe it
fresh install steps
change boot order in BIOS so USB is first, hdd second
boot from installer
follow this guide: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

when you reach the screen asking for licence, click "I don't have a key" and win 10 will continue to install and reactivate once finished

On the screen where you choose where to install win 10, if it gives you an error about GPT drives, delete all the partitions on the hdd and press next. If it still gives error, cancel out of the installer and restart PC and start installer again, it will accept next on that screen this time (some PC just need a restart here).
