Blue Screens, Crashing, and possible ram issues

I am having a lot of issues trying to push my cpu past 2.88 GHz.

Specs are:
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600
CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard: Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
RAM: 2x 1gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2, 2x 2gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2
GPU: Gigabyte Windforce GTX 770 4gb

I have been trying to overclock my Q6600 for a while now, and until recently thought that it was my cooler. I upgraded my CPU cooler to a Hyper 212 evo, and assumed that my problems would be gone. But, unfortunately, they are not.

Whenever I go for an overclock for 3 GHz or more, I am plauged by errors like "irql not less or equal", "Memory managment" and other errors like that. I researched why I would be getting blue screens, and the most prominent answer was low voltages, so I upped the voltage when I overclocked to 3 GHz to ~1.3, but that still did not do anything.

This tends to lead me to believe that the RAM is the culprit. I recently realized that instead of the RAM being 1-3, 2-4, it was supposed to be placed in 1-2, 3-4. They are all clocked at 800 MHz, and they are both XMS2, despite having different heat spreader designs.

The thing is, is that I can overclock until a certain point (~2.88-9 GHz), and after that it just falls apart.

What could this be? Help is greatly appreciated.

First of all, what are you trying to achieve with that old hardware? Even just a standard computer today doesn't have that bad of hardware (not to be mean or anything everybody has their reasons). My guess is you're just working or something, but if I were you would just build a new PC. But like I said, everybody has their reasons.

Anyways, you may or may not have to get more ram. You should though anyways, as with that motherboard you can get as much as 4 times the ram for way cheap since you only have DDR2. If that doesn't work then you should look at this --> https://neosmart.net/wiki/irql-not-less-or-equal/

I don't currently have the recourses to upgrade right now, but I know the Q6600 can perform far better than it is currently performing in my system. It is actually quite pitiful. My plan is to upgrade to an i7 7700k, Z170, 16 gb ddr4 etc., but as I already said I can't do that for now. Also, for most things my RAM is enough, and it is essentially matched. If I am going to buy something, I might as well get a Xeon X5460 for the performance boost I am looking for.

I also have a Q6600 and It's nearly impossible to overclock without spending money on a newer style motherboard that can handle the LGA775 socket(Q6600) and newer DDR3 or DDR4 ram.

I'm assuming you also have the 2.4Ghz quad core.

I'd be super careful with the old boards, I recently had to replace mine cause of the memory management error - BSOD - came to find out that the boards memory controller (whats under the heatsync beside the CPU) completely overheated, and burnt up. I heard somewhere though, those that were successful had to underclock their 800 Mhz ram to 667 to get their CPU's to clock anywhere near 3.0

I've personally tried everything and can't even get it to clock to 2.6 successfully, so you're a lot further off then myself when it comes to that.

I also have tried switching out all of my current RAM modules for different ones, and the problem persisted.

I have looked a lot online with the same exact board as me, and people have been easily achieving at the very least 3.4, and I have seen a lot of people at 3.8+.

I think the world record for the Q6600 is 5.2Mhz, but they used a liquid nitrogen setup to keep the cpu cool LOL.
I know it's possible to overclock, I've also read about a ton of people successfully doing it easily - but i myself have not been successful. (almost makes me want to go try again right now)

Yeah, but I know it should be possible for me. I just don't understand why it is doing this.
